Ohanaeze Ndigbo Announces Constitution Review, Seeks Public Input
Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has initiated a constitutional amendment process and is inviting submissions from stakeholders to enhance the effectiveness and relevance of the organization.
According to a statement released by the Secretary-General, Emeka Sibeudu, all memoranda should be submitted to the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Secretariat in Enugu between March 1 and March 12, 2025. The organization aims to involve diverse stakeholders, including state chapters, affiliates, and Igbo communities worldwide, as well as individuals with expertise in governance, law, and community development.
Public Hearing Scheduled for March 14
To ensure transparency and inclusivity, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has scheduled a public hearing on March 14, 2025, in Imo State. This session will provide a platform for further discussion, clarifications, and deliberations on the proposed amendments. The leadership encourages full participation, emphasizing that contributions will shape the organization’s future.
UNIEC Sets Conditions for Ohanaeze Ndigbo Presidential Nomination in Rivers State
Meanwhile, the United Igbo Elders Council (UNIEC) Worldwide has issued a directive concerning the nomination process for the next President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo from Rivers State. The council has stated that any previous contestants for the position will not be eligible for nomination.
In a joint statement signed by Justice Alpha Ikpeama, UNIEC Director General, and Prof. Obasi Igwe, Director of Media and Publicity, the council affirmed that this decision is not intended to undermine Ohanaeze Ndigbo. Rather, it is aimed at fostering inclusiveness, balance, and unity within the Igbo community.
State Allocations for Ohanaeze Ndigbo Leadership Positions
As part of its restructuring efforts, UNIEC has allocated leadership positions among various Igbo states. The organization clarified that all nominations will undergo ratification by its Board of Trustees (BoT) in March 2025. The allocated positions are as follows:
- Rivers State – President General, National Provost, Assistant Secretary General, National Vice Chairman (Police Affairs), National Vice President, Assistant National Director (Contact and Mobilization), and National Vice Chairman (Stakeholders Affairs).
- Imo State – Director of National Membership, National Director (Women Affairs), National Liaison Officer, National Vice President, National Vice Chairman (Inter-religious Affairs), and Assistant National Welfare Officer.
- Enugu State – National Treasurer, National Liaison Officer, National Chairman (Police Affairs), National Vice President, National Vice Chairman (Inter-religious Affairs), and Assistant National Welfare Officers.
- Ebonyi State – National Director (Contact and Mobilization), National Liaison Officer, National Director of Welfare, National Vice President, Assistant National Provost, and Assistant National Organizing Secretary.
- Delta State – National Legal Adviser, National Organizing Secretary, National Chairman (Political Affairs), National Vice President, National Vice Chairman (Police Affairs), and Assistant Director (Women Affairs).
- Anambra State – National Financial Secretary, National Chairman (Stakeholders Affairs), National Chairman (Inter-religious Affairs), National Vice President, Assistant National Director (Media and Publicity), and Assistant Director (National Membership).
- Abia State – Secretary General, National Director (Media and Publicity), National Vice President, National Vice Chairman (Security Affairs), National Vice Chairman (Political Affairs), and Assistant National Legal Adviser.
Key Requirements for Nominees
UNIEC emphasized that all nominees, whether residing in Nigeria or the diaspora, must demonstrate integrity, honesty, and transparency. They must also align with the vision, mission, and objectives of the organization, ensuring that personal interests do not overshadow collective Igbo aspirations.
