Ogun Assembly Calls For Boundary Commission To Resolve Inter-State Disputes

Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Oludaisi Elemide, has called on Governor Dapo Abiodun to establish a State Boundary Commission without delay. This initiative aims to address persistent boundary disputes between Ogun and neighboring states, notably Oyo State.

Elemide made this appeal on Tuesday during an inspection tour to conflict-prone communities such as Eleso-Iya Dudu, Ataakan, and Aiyegbede. The delegation assessed the placement of boundary beacons at disputed points between the two southwestern states.

He was accompanied by Deputy Speaker Bolanle Ajayi, seven other members of the Assembly, Odeda Local Government Chairperson Folasade Adeyemo, the Deputy Governor’s Technical and Boundary Committees, representatives from the State Police Command, Amotekun Corps, and other security agencies.

The Speaker emphasized the importance of improving infrastructure in the disputed zones, especially through enhanced road construction, to foster inclusion and peace among residents.

On the relevance of a State Boundary Commission, Elemide noted that the proposed body would maintain long-term records of historical and land-related data. This continuity, he said, would help in coordinating effectively with the National Boundary Commission, thereby streamlining resolutions to territorial disputes.

He urged residents to remain calm and respect the rule of law. According to him, the Assembly will pursue legislative actions, including passing a House Resolution, to communicate its findings and proposals to stakeholders such as the Governor and the National Boundary Commission.

In a related development, Elemide stressed the need for the State Government to reinforce local security by installing more outposts and deploying additional police forces. This would counter the growing incidence of assaults on peaceful residents in the affected areas.

Speaking earlier, Folasade Adeyemo, the Chairperson of Odeda Local Government, commended the Assembly members for their visit. She urged Governor Abiodun to intervene promptly to restore lasting peace in the region.
