Former Shooting Stars midfielder Mutiu Adepoju is backing his old club to clinch a spot in continental competitions at the conclusion of this season.
The Oluyole Warriors are currently competing for a top-three finish in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), with hopes of securing a place in the prestigious CAF tournaments. The two best-placed teams will advance to the CAF Champions League, while the third-place team will join the CAF Confederation Cup.
As of now, Shooting Stars hold fifth position with 48 points from 33 matches, still in contention for a spot in the top three.
Adepoju, reflecting on the club’s performance, expressed confidence in their ability to make it to the continental stage. He noted that although the team could have been in second place, they had performed admirably throughout the season. He added, “It’s been a very commendable season for Shooting Stars, even though they could have been higher up in the table. They were in second for a period before dropping to fourth due to a few disappointing results.”
Despite the setback, Adepoju remains hopeful about their chances. “They’ve still got a good shot at qualifying for continental football, and I believe they have the quality to finish in the top three by the end of the season,” he added.
Shooting Stars were dealt a blow in their recent match against Bayelsa United, losing 3-0 in their matchday 33 fixture in Yenagoa. It was their first defeat in four league outings, but their determination remains strong as they aim for a continental qualification spot.
