Nnamdi Kanu Raises Deep Concerns Inside Sokoto Prison

The Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Oji River in Enugu State, Rt. Rev. Ikechukwu Egbuonu, has shed light on the growing concerns expressed by Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), during his recent visit to the Sokoto Correctional Facility.
The bishop, who spoke during an interview with AIT, explained that the purpose of his visit was to check on Kanu’s well-being, offer spiritual support, and listen directly to the challenges he has faced since being moved to the Sokoto prison.

According to Bishop Egbuonu, Nnamdi Kanu specifically drew attention to his deteriorating heart condition. The IPOB leader reportedly expressed worry over the fact that his medical situation has not improved, highlighting that his health challenges require closer monitoring and consistent medical care. Kanu is said to have emphasised that the environment and distance make it difficult for him to receive timely medical attention.

The bishop further revealed that Kanu raised another major concern—the overwhelming distance between Abuja, where most of his legal proceedings take place, and Sokoto, where he is currently detained. He explained that Kanu fears that the long journey may severely affect his ability to continue with his appeal process. The IPOB leader reportedly noted that frequent transportation from Sokoto to Abuja could worsen his heart condition and delay the progress of his legal interventions.

Bishop Egbuonu stated that these issues weighed heavily on Kanu’s mind throughout the visit. He noted that the IPOB leader spoke with great anxiety about how the situation may hinder his right to fair legal representation due to constant travel, prolonged waiting times, and health pressures.

The bishop concluded by appealing for adequate medical attention for the detainee and emphasized that ensuring Kanu’s health and fair legal access should remain a priority for the authorities.
