Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has raised alarm over the worsening state of Nigeria, claiming that the country is on the brink of collapse. Addressing members of the Labour Party’s National Executive Council (NEC) in an emergency meeting in Abuja, Obi emphasized that no amount of defense from those in power can hide the reality of Nigeria’s dire situation.

The former Governor of Anambra State called on his party members not to let fear stop them from speaking the truth to those in power. He shared poignant stories of people who once had enough to feed and support others but now find themselves begging on the streets for survival.

Obi’s message was clear: “Do not fear anyone. Those who were afraid in the past have not done better. We must speak out when things are wrong.”

He continued, “Nigeria is collapsing. No matter what anyone says, the evidence is there. The data is undeniable. More and more people are becoming impoverished.”

The Labour Party leader urged members to visit their villages to witness firsthand the growing number of people who, once self-sufficient, are now forced to beg. “These are people who used to provide for others but now have nothing left and are begging for survival,” Obi lamented.

He further illustrated the severity of the crisis with a personal experience. “Even at this hotel, every time I visit, I encounter people telling me, ‘Sir, I just arrived in Abuja and I cannot afford to go back.’ This used to be a place where people would offer me drinks, food, and hospitality. Now, no one offers anything. This shows how much the situation has deteriorated.”

Obi’s statement serves as a sobering reminder of the growing hardships Nigerians are facing, with even those who once thrived now struggling to meet basic needs.

As he concluded his remarks, Obi appealed for unity and collective action: “We must recognize that things are tough. It’s time for all of us to come together and take action. I appreciate those of you who are doing well, but let’s stand together to ensure that we do what is right.”
