Nigeria’s Federal Government Announces Complete Closure of Ijora Bridge for Urgent Rehabilitation Work

In a decisive move to safeguard commuters and restore structural integrity, the Federal Government of Nigeria has announced the complete closure of the Ijora Bridge in Lagos starting April 27, 2025. This announcement comes as part of an intensified effort to conduct critical structural maintenance on the aging infrastructure, which serves as a strategic link between Ijora Causeway and the Apapa axis.

During a field inspection on Monday, Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, emphasized the necessity of the project. According to a report by NAN, Kesha confirmed that the current phase of work involves lifting the bridge deck to replace around 50 worn-out bearings across three vital sections of the bridge.

“The bridge has been under rehabilitation in multiple phases. We’re now at the final and most delicate stage where we must lift the entire deck to replace the compromised support bearings,” she explained.

The Ijora Bridge is a crucial route leading to Apapa, which houses two of Nigeria’s busiest seaports — the Apapa and Tincan Island Ports. This infrastructure supports thousands of daily commuters and heavy-duty vehicles that facilitate major imports and exports.

Mrs. Kesha acknowledged the inconveniences the closure might pose to motorists and logistics companies, but she urged patience and cooperation, noting that the closure is time-sensitive and absolutely necessary for public safety.

“The bridge is not on the verge of collapse, but there are significant vibrations felt while driving over it. That’s a clear indication that the spring-like bearings underneath have severely degraded,” she added.

Impact and Traffic Advisory

Commuters heading towards Apapa and Lagos Island are advised to use alternative routes during the repair period. Traffic authorities will be deploying additional personnel to manage diversions and minimize congestion during peak hours.
