Nigerian Police Investigate Activist VeryDarkMan for Unauthorized Uniform Use

The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) has raised concerns and initiated an investigation following activist and social media personality VeryDarkMan’s recent use of a police uniform in a widely circulated video. Known for his outspoken approach to tackling social issues, VeryDarkMan, whose real name is Martins Otse, appeared wearing a uniform bearing the insignia of a chief superintendent of police (CSP). This display has drawn a swift response from the NPF, who clarified that this was an unauthorized act and stressed the legal implications of misusing police insignia.

In the video, VeryDarkMan also voiced his dedication to fighting injustice within Nigeria, a stance that has resonated with his large social media following. However, the NPF has emphasized that any use of its uniform without proper authorization constitutes a breach of law. The NPF’s official statement on X (formerly Twitter) explained that they are working to uncover both the origins of the police gear and the context in which it was used.

Highlighting its position, the NPF reminded the public of the legal ramifications surrounding the misuse of police attire and symbols, citing Section 251 of the Criminal Code and Section 133 of the Penal Code, which define such actions as criminal offenses punishable by law. The statement read, “The Force unequivocally disassociates itself from this unauthorized portrayal and has launched a full investigation to determine the source of the Police gear used, as well as the authority under which he acted.”

While the NPF expressed support for creative content development among young Nigerians, it issued a caution against exploiting its identity markers for personal gain or social media influence. “Unauthorized use of these items undermines the values and integrity of the Force and will not be tolerated,” the NPF stated, reinforcing that police symbols are not to be used frivolously.

Since gaining popularity, VeryDarkMan has often found himself at the center of controversy, using his platform to draw attention to various social issues. However, this recent incident raises questions about the boundaries of creative expression when it involves sensitive symbols of national law enforcement.
