Kemi Badenoch, leader of the UK Conservative Party, has criticized the Nigeria Police for allegedly exploiting citizens rather than safeguarding them, as reported by The Niche.
Badenoch shared her experience in an interview with a British journalist who asked if she trusted the UK police. Comparing her encounters, she highlighted a stark contrast between Nigeria’s policing and the UK’s.
“I do [trust the UK police]. My experience with the Nigeria Police was very negative. Coming to the UK, my experience with the British Police was very positive,” she explained.
Recalling her time in Nigeria, Badenoch claimed, “The police in Nigeria will rob us.” Laughing, she added, “I remember the police stole my brother’s shoe and his watch.” This statement drew a shocked reaction from the interviewer, who exclaimed, “They took his shoe and his watch?”
Badenoch elaborated further, attributing some of the misconduct to the country’s struggles with poverty. “It’s a very poor country. People do all sorts of things. Giving people a gun is just a license to intimidate,” she said.
However, she emphasized that the UK’s policing standards should not be judged by Nigeria’s shortcomings. Reflecting on her experience in the UK, Badenoch recalled, “When I was burgled, for example, the police were there. They were helpful before they eventually caught the person. This was in 2004, 20 years ago.”
Her remarks have sparked discussions on Nigeria’s policing challenges and the systemic issues contributing to the misconduct within its security forces.
