The Nigerian national power grid has experienced its first collapse of 2025, resulting in a nationwide blackout affecting both households and industries. This incident occurred within the first ten days of the new year, causing widespread power disruptions across the country.
This marks the 13th power grid failure recorded in the last 13 months. Recent data indicates that electricity generation plummeted from 2,111.01 megawatts at 2:00 pm to a mere 390.20 megawatts by 3:00 pm on Saturday.
The Energy Podcast verified the event, posting, “National grid suffers major collapse… First in 2025.” However, partial power restoration efforts were reported shortly after, with another update stating, “Restoration has begun… Currently generating 302MW as of 02:40 pm.”
In a related event from November 2024, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) disclosed that the national grid faced a partial disruption due to multiple generator and line trippings, which destabilized the grid. This information was shared by TCN’s General Manager for Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah.
Mbah clarified that data from the National Control Centre (NCC) revealed some parts of the grid remained unaffected by the disruption. Engineers from TCN have since been working to restore power to the affected regions. Bulk power supply had already been restored to Abuja by 2:49 pm, with efforts ongoing to reach other states.
“We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this situation has caused our electricity consumers,” Mbah added.
