In an extensive campaign against terrorism and criminal activities, the Nigerian Military achieved remarkable milestones between January and December 2024. The Defence Headquarters reported that its operations led to the elimination of 8,034 terrorists, the arrest of 11,623 suspects, and the rescue of 6,376 hostages across various regions of the country.
Nationwide Efforts to Combat Threats
Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, highlighted these achievements during a press briefing in Abuja. He explained that troops operated in five major theatres, demonstrating heightened alertness and readiness to counter persistent threats.
Key Recoveries:
- Weapons: 4,053 AK-47s, 1,123 locally made guns, 731 Dane guns, and 240 pump-action shotguns.
- Ammunition: Over 211,000 rounds of various calibers, including 7.62mm NATO and 7.62mm special ammo.
- Illegal Crude Oil: 53.1 million liters of stolen crude, alongside millions of liters of refined AGO, PMS, and DPK.
- Estimated Losses to Oil Thieves: Over ₦57 billion prevented.
Regional Operations and Successes
Northeast: Operation Hadin Kai
- Neutralized 2,918 terrorists.
- Arrested 2,285 suspects.
- Rescued 1,496 hostages.
- Facilitated the surrender of 15,950 Boko Haram/ISWAP members and their families.
Northwest: Operation Hadarin Daji
- Eliminated 2,646 terrorists.
- Arrested 1,654 suspects.
- Rescued 2,339 hostages.
North Central
- Under Operation Safe Haven, troops neutralized 411 extremists, arrested 1,859 individuals, and rescued 927 hostages.
- Operation Whirl Stroke accounted for 583 terrorists neutralized, 916 suspects arrested, and 649 hostages freed.
Southeast: Operation UDO KA
- Neutralized 666 terrorists, arrested 893 suspects, and rescued 323 hostages.
A Call for Vigilance
Maj.-Gen. Buba commended the troops’ efforts while urging citizens to remain vigilant and supportive of the military’s operations. He emphasized the need for continued collaboration to ensure lasting peace and security in the nation.
