Vice President Kashim Shettima has praised the Nigerian media landscape for its dedication and integrity in confronting what he described as the growing wave of Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI) targeted at the nation.
He gave this commendation during the 2025 Conference and Annual General Meeting of the International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria, held on Tuesday in Abuja. The event centered on the theme: “Addressing Media Repression and Safeguarding Democratic Accountability in Nigeria.”
Speaking at the gathering, Shettima emphasized that Nigeria continues to stand out as a country with one of the most energetic, diverse, and resilient media ecosystems in the world. He highlighted the crucial responsibility journalists bear in filtering truth from distortion—especially at a time when misinformation networks and external influence operations are becoming more sophisticated across the globe.
According to the Vice President, the vigilance demonstrated by Nigerian media practitioners has played a major role in protecting national stability. He noted that their consistent efforts help safeguard democracy, promote transparency, and shield the nation from disinformation campaigns that often originate outside the country.
Shettima further stressed that as technology evolves, the battle against foreign information manipulation becomes more challenging. However, he expressed confidence in the capacity of Nigerian media professionals to uphold ethical journalism, prioritize credible reporting, and continue serving as defenders of democratic accountability.
The IPI conference brought together editors, journalists, media executives, and stakeholders to examine the pressure points confronting the press and to strategize on strengthening media freedom in Nigeria. Discussions also focused on enhancing digital literacy, supporting independent journalism, and countering interference that threatens information integrity.
The Vice President reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to engaging constructively with media institutions and supporting frameworks that protect press freedom. He reiterated that a strong, free, and responsible press is vital to democratic governance and national development.
