NICASA Condemns the Death of Nigerian Man in South African Police Custody
The Nigerian Citizens Association in South Africa (NICASA) has strongly criticized the tragic passing of 40-year-old Benjamin Okoli, a Nigerian citizen who died while in police custody.
This incident has sparked widespread outrage, occurring less than a month after another Nigerian, 50-year-old Jeremiah Okoye, allegedly died under similar circumstances in South Africa on January 13.
Speaking on the unsettling trend of Nigerians dying in police custody, Dr. Frank Onyekwelu, President-General of NICASA, described the situation as unbearable. He called for a thorough investigation and justice for the victims.
Details Surrounding Okoli’s Death
Benjamin Okoli, originally from Akpu, Orumba South, Anambra State, is survived by his wife and child. Reports indicate that he was stopped and searched by police officers, who later took him to his residence along with his brother for further inspection.
Despite finding no incriminating evidence, the officers reportedly subjected Okoli and his brother to severe torture, beating, and brutalization. Unable to endure the assault, Okoli collapsed into a coma.
Tragically, his brother’s efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, while the police allegedly stood by without offering any assistance. It was only later that paramedics arrived and pronounced him dead.
Patterns of Violence Against Nigerians in South Africa
Dr. Onyekwelu pointed out the disturbing pattern, emphasizing that Okoye’s death was still under investigation when Okoli suffered a similar fate—both allegedly at the hands of the same police unit.
“This is the same group of officers accused of killing Jeremiah Okoye. Now, two Nigerians have died in police custody in less than a month,” he stated.
NICASA leaders in Limpopo Province are deeply concerned about the increasing number of Nigerians reportedly being targeted by law enforcement officers in South Africa.
Calls for Justice and Government Intervention
In response to these tragic incidents, NICASA has urged the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) to carry out a transparent investigation and ensure that the officers involved are held accountable.
The Nigerian organization has also informed the Nigerian Missions in Pretoria and Johannesburg about these alarming developments. They hope immediate action will be taken to prevent further loss of Nigerian lives.
“We appeal to our fellow nationals to remain calm, law-abiding, and continue their daily activities peacefully,” Onyekwelu advised.
