Nigerian Agency DSS Finally Grants Nnamdi Kanu Access To Legal Team After Two Months

After nearly two months of being denied access to his legal team, Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was finally granted access by the Department of State Services (DSS) on Monday. The decision came following the intervention of Hon. Obi Aguocha, a legal expert, who played a crucial role in securing the meeting.

Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, the lead counsel for Kanu’s legal team, confirmed the development in a statement on Monday evening. He explained that Kanu’s access to his lawyers was made possible by the directives of the Director-General of the DSS, Mr. Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi. Ejimakor also revealed that Kanu’s legal team, which had been barred from meeting with him since September 27, 2024, was joined by Ndidi Awurum, a US-based lawyer, for the session.

In his post on X (formerly Twitter), Ejimakor acknowledged the significant role played by Hon. Obi Aguocha in facilitating the visitation. He wrote, “Today, on the directives of the DG DSS, the #MnkLegalTeam conducted the first successful visitation with MAZI NNAMDI KANU since Sept. 27. Mazi Ndidi Awurum, who came from the US, was with us. Our tireless legal efforts and Hon. Obi Aguocha’s intervention were crucial to this outcome.”

Ejimakor had previously raised alarms over the DSS’s blatant disregard for court orders by continuously preventing Kanu’s legal team from meeting with him. On November 1, SaharaReporters reported that Ejimakor accused the DSS of deliberately blocking Kanu’s access to his lawyers, in direct violation of a court order granting him that right. He vowed that due to the DSS’s continued disobedience, all legal actions to enforce compliance would be pursued with renewed determination.
