The Nigeria Police Force has debunked viral claims about recruiting a visually impaired constable, clarifying that the officer in question sustained an injury in the line of duty.
NPF Clarifies Recruitment Standards Amid Social Media Misinformation
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has firmly denied reports suggesting that a visually impaired officer was included in the latest batch of newly recruited constables.
In an official statement released on Tuesday via its X (formerly Twitter) handle, the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, clarified that the officer in question originally joined the police force in perfect physical health, meeting all necessary recruitment standards. However, he later suffered vision loss due to a gunshot wound sustained while on duty.
The statement debunked the viral claim, emphasizing that the officer was not among the recent recruits and attributing the misinformation to misleading social media reports.
Officer Sustained Injury in the Line of Duty
According to the police statement:
“The Nigeria Police Force is aware of social media reports alleging that a newly recruited Police Constable is visually impaired and, therefore, unfit for service. We wish to categorically state that the said officer was recruited in sound physical condition, but unfortunately suffered a gunshot injury to his left eye during an operational incident two years ago.
“Contrary to speculation, he is not among the recently graduated constables.”
The NPF further highlighted that strict recruitment and training protocols are followed to ensure that only candidates who meet the necessary medical and physical fitness standards are enlisted. The officer’s injury stands as a testament to the risks and sacrifices that police personnel endure in the line of duty.
Commitment to Officer Welfare & Public Safety
The police also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting officers injured in service. Throughout his recovery, the affected officer has received full assistance and welfare support from the Force.
The NPF urged the public and media outlets to refrain from spreading misinformation that could damage the reputation of the police force and its personnel.
“Every officer of the Nigeria Police Force plays a vital role in maintaining national security. The dissemination of false narratives can mislead the public and undermine the integrity of our law enforcement institutions.”
Conclusion
The Nigeria Police Force remains dedicated to transparency, professionalism, and officer welfare, ensuring that only qualified candidates are recruited while also supporting those who face injuries in the line of duty.
