Nigeria Needs Nurses More Than Europe or America – A Call for Commitment to Serve the Nation

Alhassan Ndagi, the Registrar of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, has appealed to Nigerian nurses to prioritize their service to the country, stressing that Nigeria’s healthcare system requires their expertise more than Europe or America.

Ndagi made these remarks during the induction of 37 pioneering nursing students from Fountain University, Osogbo, into the profession. Represented by Stella Godswill, Ndagi encouraged the newly inducted nurses to remain dedicated to their profession, despite the challenges posed by the country’s economic situation.

He emphasized that while many may be tempted to explore opportunities abroad, it’s important to remember that a nursing degree is only the start of a fulfilling career. “Though Nigeria faces economic difficulties, your skills are needed here more than in Western countries,” Ndagi stated.

Furthermore, Ndagi urged nurses to embrace technological advancements in healthcare. He highlighted the importance of not only learning new technologies but also understanding their proper use to enhance patient care.

Earlier, Professor Ramota Karim, Vice-Chancellor of Fountain University, also encouraged the new nurses to focus on contributing to the country’s healthcare system rather than seeking opportunities abroad. “As ambassadors of this institution, your mission is to make meaningful contributions to society. While overseas opportunities may seem appealing, remember that Nigeria needs your skills, commitment, and innovation to build a stronger healthcare system,” she said.

This call for action serves as a reminder of the vital role nurses play in strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare sector, urging them to consider the broader impact of their work on the nation’s health and well-being.
