Nigeria Customs Seizes 2,433kg Of Cannabis & Codeine On Lagos Waterways

The Western Marine Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted a significant haul of illegal drugs, including 2,433kg of Cannabis Sativa and 195 bottles of 300ml codeine syrup, during an operation on the South-Western Inland Waterways.

Customs Reinforces Commitment to Securing Waterways

Speaking at the official handover of the confiscated drugs in Lagos, Comptroller Paul Bamisaiye, the Customs Area Controller (CAC) of the Western Marine Command, emphasized the agency’s commitment to combating drug trafficking. He stated that two suspects were apprehended in connection with the illegal cargo.

According to Compt. Bamisaiye, this seizure is a testament to the effectiveness of the command’s security measures. He recalled a previous operation on February 21, 2025, where officers confiscated 53 sacks of Cannabis Sativa. In another recent interception near the Badagry axis, two suspects were caught with 29 loaves of Cannabis Sativa disguised in repackaged rice sacks.

Handover to NDLEA and NAFDAC for Investigation

During the press briefing, the customs boss officially handed over 4,973 loaves of Cannabis Sativa, 195 bottles of 300ml codeine syrup, and two suspects to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution.

“These seizures reaffirm our unwavering commitment to securing the South-Western waterways and preventing the proliferation of illicit substances. Strong inter-agency collaboration has played a key role in achieving these results,” he noted.

Compt. Bamisaiye also extended gratitude to the Comptroller-General of Customs and his management team for equipping officers with the necessary tools, welfare, and incentives to perform their duties effectively. He assured that the agency remains vigilant in tackling smuggling activities and drug-related crimes.

NDLEA Pledges Swift Prosecution

Marine Commander of the NDLEA, Emmanuel Udoh, acknowledged the handover and assured that his agency would conduct thorough investigations to ensure that justice is served.

“The swift prosecution of offenders is crucial in disrupting the illicit drug trade and curbing its impact on society,” Udoh emphasized.

The seizure underscores the Nigerian government’s commitment to eradicating drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
