Major Contraband Seized at Seme Border
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has successfully intercepted various smuggled goods, including Cannabis sativa (marijuana), Tramadol, petroleum motor spirit (PMS), and foreign parboiled rice, with a total duty-paid value (DPV) of N267 million at the Seme-Krake border.
The confiscated items comprise 444 parcels of Cannabis sativa, 181 packs of Tramadol, 600 bottles of Codeine syrup (100ml each), 240 kegs of PMS, 1,809 bags of foreign parboiled rice (50kg each), 17 sacks of used shoes, 56 bales of second-hand clothes, and 203 pieces of used tyres.
NCS Strengthens Border Security and Revenue Generation
During a press briefing at the ECOWAS Joint Border Post in Seme, Customs Area Controller Dr. Ben Oramalugo highlighted that these items were seized in February 2025 for violating the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023 (NCSA 23).
Oramalugo also disclosed that the Command generated an impressive N743.7 million in revenue within the same period, reinforcing the NCS’s commitment to plugging revenue leakages and enhancing national development through proper revenue collection.
Furthermore, the Command facilitated the export of 28,395.293 metric tonnes of agricultural and other produce, transported via 806 trucks. These exports had a Free on Board (FOB) value of N7.85 billion (approximately $4.99 million). Additionally, fees collected under the Nigeria Export Supervision Scheme (NESS) reached N39.26 million, alongside a total surcharge of N2.43 million.
Crackdown on Smuggling and Strengthening Security Measures
The Area Controller reaffirmed the NCS’s dedication to curbing smuggling by engaging community leaders and implementing intelligence-driven operations. He warned that the Command would not tolerate illegal trade activities and encouraged smugglers to transition into lawful business practices.
The proactive enforcement measures, he noted, would further enhance national security, economic growth, and trade facilitation in the coming months.
Collaboration with NDLEA to Combat Drug Trafficking
As part of an inter-agency collaboration, the seized Cannabis sativa (marijuana) was officially handed over to the Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Seme Command.
NDLEA Commander Fingeron Owen Dinneys, who received the illicit substances, assured the public that rigorous investigations would be conducted to track down those responsible for drug trafficking. Acknowledging the complexities of apprehending drug syndicates, Dinneys emphasized the agency’s relentless commitment to reducing the circulation of dangerous substances.
“It is not always possible to apprehend suspects immediately, as criminals take measures to evade capture. However, our agency remains determined to dismantle these networks,” Dinneys stated.
Despite the challenges, the NDLEA remains steadfast in its mission to combat drug trafficking and ensure the safety of Nigerian citizens.
