Nigeria Congratulates Lebanon’s Newly Elected President, Joseph Aoun
The Federal Government of Nigeria has extended its congratulations to Lebanon’s newly elected President, Joseph Aoun, after his significant victory in the Lebanese parliament.
Aoun secured 99 votes in the 128-member parliament, successfully ending a leadership void that had left Lebanon without a president since October 2022.
In an official statement released on Saturday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, Nigeria expressed its enthusiasm for strengthening bilateral ties with Lebanon.
The statement read:
“The Federal Republic of Nigeria offers its congratulations to Joseph Aoun following his election as President of the Republic of Lebanon. Nigeria looks forward to further strengthening our historic, strong, and vibrant relationship for the benefit of all our people.”
A Victory for Stability
Joseph Aoun, Lebanon’s army chief since 2017, was elected to the largely ceremonial presidential role, breaking a prolonged political deadlock. His candidacy was endorsed by major political factions in Lebanon and supported by global powers such as the United States, France, and Saudi Arabia.
The election concluded after Aoun’s main rival, backed by Hezbollah, withdrew and offered support just days before the final vote.
Aoun’s Role in Peace and Reconstruction
Aoun’s election came shortly after Lebanon negotiated a ceasefire agreement with Israel. His leadership will be crucial in stabilizing the nation and overseeing key aspects of the peace deal, including:
- Overseeing the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon
- Supervising the disarmament of Hezbollah, with a January 26 deadline
In his inaugural address, Aoun committed to restoring state control over all weapons, referring to Hezbollah’s significant military influence. He also highlighted plans for reconstruction in areas affected by the Israel conflict, with damage repair costs estimated at $8.5 billion by the World Bank.
Conclusion
Nigeria’s congratulatory message underscores the importance of continued diplomatic relations between both nations. Aoun’s leadership offers hope for peace and development, especially as Lebanon navigates its post-conflict recovery.
