Nigeria and Cuba Sign Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to Boost Bilateral Cooperation
Abuja, Nigeria – In a move to enhance diplomatic relations and foster deeper collaboration, Nigeria and Cuba have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening political ties and expanding cooperation in key sectors such as trade, investment, healthcare, science, and technology.
The historic agreement was signed in Abuja on Monday during a high-level meeting between Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, and Cuba’s Foreign Minister, His Excellency Bruno Eduardo Rodríguez Parrilla.
Strengthening Nigeria-Cuba Diplomatic Relations
Amb. Tuggar emphasized the significance of the visit, noting the long-standing relationship between both nations, which dates back to 1974. He highlighted the shared historical and cultural connections, acknowledging Cuba’s pivotal role in supporting Africa’s liberation movements against colonialism and racial discrimination.
“As you know, the Cuban Foreign Minister is visiting us in Abuja today, which is a crucial engagement considering the unique and long-standing relationship Nigeria shares with Cuba,” Tuggar stated.
Cultural and Economic Cooperation Between Nigeria and Cuba
Reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to fortifying bilateral relations, Tuggar described Cuba as an essential part of Nigeria’s diaspora due to their shared cultural heritage. He also pointed out that both nations are keen on leveraging their partnership to drive mutual economic growth and explore opportunities in science and technology.
On his part, Rodríguez Parrilla commended Nigeria’s developmental strides and extended gratitude for the country’s unwavering support for Cuba, particularly in the face of international sanctions. He reiterated Cuba’s deep-rooted cultural and ancestral links with Nigeria, describing the West African country as integral to Cuba’s national identity.
“Nigeria and Cuba share a profound connection through history, tradition, and common aspirations. This MoU marks a new chapter in our diplomatic cooperation,” he remarked.

The diplomatic engagement concluded with both nations reaffirming their commitment to strengthening existing agreements while seeking new avenues for collaboration.
