Nigeria Acquires Alpha Jets from France to Strengthen Air Force Operations

On December 4, 2024, the Chief of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), General Hasan Abubakar, confirmed the purchase of 12 Alpha Jet E aircraft from France’s Armée de l’Air et de l’Espace (AAE, French Air and Space Force).    • France, transitioning to the PC-21 Pilatus for training, is phasing out its Alpha Jets.

   • The NAF has operated Alpha Jets since the 1980s, primarily for pilot training and close air support missions in counter-insurgency operations.
   • Initially acquiring 24 jets, only eight remain in service due to combat losses and accidents. In 2015, five additional Alpha Jets were purchased from the United States, though one was lost in a crash.
