Niger State Declares Emergency on General Hospital Minna: Plans for Modern Healthcare Revamp

Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has officially declared a state of emergency regarding the condition of the General Hospital in Minna, describing its present state as highly deplorable.

Speaking during the weekly State Executive Council gathering, Governor Bago highlighted the urgent necessity for the hospital to be transformed into a modern, effective, and high-performing healthcare facility that can properly serve residents.

According to a press statement released by Aisha Wakaso, who serves as the Special Adviser on Print Media to the Governor, the current General Hospital Minna, built over five decades ago, has become outdated and inadequate for the ever-growing healthcare demands of the population in Niger State.

He pointed out that the hospital has suffered prolonged strain over the years, leaving it incapable of delivering quality healthcare to residents of Minna and neighboring communities. The deteriorating situation has made it extremely difficult to guarantee effective and safe healthcare services for the people, he explained.

In response to these challenges, the Governor announced the formation of a committee composed of special advisers alongside other key stakeholders. This committee has been tasked with carrying out a comprehensive assessment of the hospital’s status and developing actionable recommendations for its revival.

Governor Bago explained that based on the committee’s proposals, preparations are already ongoing to demolish the existing hospital buildings and to begin reconstructing new wards and specialized units in a phased manner.

Expressing deep disappointment over the current state of the hospital, he remarked, “We have to be honest with ourselves. The General Hospital Minna, as it is today, cannot meet its purpose. It is overstretched, obsolete, and poses safety concerns. What is truly needed is a modern, well-functioning, and efficient health institution that fits with our ambition for a healthier Niger State.”

He clarified that while the reconstruction process is underway, critical departments and key healthcare services would be relocated temporarily to several selected primary healthcare centers throughout the state. This will help to avoid interruption in healthcare delivery, thereby guaranteeing that residents continue to have access to essential medical care.

Governor Bago emphasized that this initiative is only one part of a comprehensive strategy to renew the entire health sector within Niger State. The primary goal, he stated, is to make sure the citizens of the state have consistent access to dignified and high-quality medical treatment that meets modern standards.

He underlined his administration’s commitment to constructing working systems, giving priority to health, and making sure the citizens see real improvements in the way healthcare is provided across the state.

Finally, Governor Bago reassured the public that every required measure would be taken to reduce possible disruptions during the transition period, and to maintain the availability of vital medical services until the new, upgraded hospital facilities are fully operational.
