Israel Removes Military Officer After Admitting to Failures in Gaza Aid Workers’ Tragedy

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have publicly acknowledged critical errors and violations of protocol during an operation that led to the deaths of 15 humanitarian workers in southern Gaza on March 23, 2025. According to a statement released by the IDF, the deputy commander of the Golani Brigade has been dismissed for his involvement in the incident, which occurred during a dawn rescue mission in Rafah. Among the victims were six civil defense personnel, eight members of the Palestinian Red Crescent, and one United Nations staff member, all of whom were providing urgent assistance to civilians in the area. The Israeli military admitted that the operation involved “professional misjudgments, disobedience of direct orders, and incomplete reporting”. Initially, the army claimed the medical teams failed to properly identify their vehicles using emergency signals. However, a follow-up investigation contradicted this and revealed internal communication breakdowns and poor situational awareness among ground forces. Furthermore, reports indicate that the victims were hastily buried in a sandy trench, alongside their damaged rescue vehicles, and were only discovered days later. This grim revelation has intensified international criticism and sparked renewed calls for an independent war crimes investigation. As part of the military’s accountability process, the field commander in charge of the operation is facing formal censure. The IDF emphasized that this action reflects the seriousness of the incident and their commitment to upholding operational standards. This tragedy has prompted renewed scrutiny from global human rights organizations. According to Human Rights Watch, civilian safety must be prioritized in conflict zones, and this incident underscores the dangers faced by aid workers operating in high-risk environments. Ukraine Faces Renewed Air Raid Alerts Just Hours After Russia Ends One-Day Easter Ceasefire

Just hours after Russia’s one-day Easter ceasefire expired, Ukraine was once again under heavy air raid alerts. The Ukrainian air force issued warnings across Kyiv and much of the eastern region, as explosions were heard in the southern port city of Mykolaiv early Monday morning. According to Reuters, the short-lived truce initiated by President Vladimir Putin on Saturday ended at midnight Moscow time, and there has been no extension. Despite the temporary halt, both Ukraine and Russia accused each other of violating the agreement. Ukraine documented nearly 3,000 breaches during the ceasefire window, particularly along the Pokrovsk front line. While Ukraine expressed readiness to uphold a 30-day pause in combat, President Zelenskyy stressed multiple times that a prolonged truce would aid peace efforts. However, the Kremlin did not issue any further directives to extend the ceasefire. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, as cited by Russia’s TASS News Agency, confirmed there were no additional commands from Moscow. In the early hours of Monday, the Ukrainian air force reported that air raid alerts began shortly after midnight in the east and steadily expanded toward central regions. By 4:41 a.m. local time, Kyiv’s military command urged civilians to head to the nearest shelters and stay protected until the danger subsided. Mykolaiv’s Mayor, Oleksandr Senkevich, confirmed via Telegram that explosions had occurred in the city but did not clarify whether they resulted from active air defense or a direct strike. Meanwhile, across the border, Russia’s Voronezh region also experienced air raid sirens overnight. Russian officials reported 444 attacks from Ukrainian forces and over 900 drone incidents, causing multiple civilian casualties. Zelenskyy’s administration highlighted that despite a calm Sunday, the truce was largely symbolic, given the high number of recorded Russian violations. Marco Rubio Denies Reports of Trump Planning to Shut Down U.S. Embassies in Africa

In a firm rebuttal, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has dismissed circulating claims that former President Donald Trump is considering shutting down American embassies across the African continent. A recent publication by The New York Times, which speculated that Trump might approve an executive directive next week to scale back U.S. diplomatic missions in Africa, was tagged as misinformation by Rubio. Addressing the issue on X (formerly Twitter), Rubio stated, “This is fake news. The New York Times falls victim to another hoax.” According to the NYT’s report, the rumored order could potentially result in the downsizing or complete closure of the Bureau of African Affairs, a critical department overseeing U.S. diplomatic strategies and relationships in Sub-Saharan Africa. Additionally, the report suggested that non-essential U.S. embassies and consulates across the region might be decommissioned by October 1, impacting civil service and diplomatic personnel. The claims further mentioned that remaining diplomatic activities would be conducted through “targeted, mission-focused deployments”, rather than maintaining full embassy operations. However, Rubio’s public dismissal of the report brings clarity to the growing uncertainty. Senator Bamidele’s Easter Message Encourages Nigerian Leaders to Embrace Unity and Reject Divisive Politics

Senator Bamidele’s Easter Message Encourages Nigerian Leaders to Embrace Unity and Reject Divisive Politics Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, representing Ekiti Central, has shared a heartfelt Easter message with Nigerians and Christians globally, encouraging national leaders to forgo divisive rhetoric and prioritize unity and peace-building. Addressing the symbolic essence of Easter—the resurrection of Jesus Christ—Senator Bamidele emphasized the need for national reflection on the principles Christ exemplified: love, sacrifice, justice, and compassion for all humanity. “As we commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, we must reflect on His values and embody His purposeful life, marked by justice, love, and selflessness,” the senator stated. He underscored the need for collective harmony, noting that Nigeria’s development depends on cooperation among its diverse population, not division or antagonism. Bamidele criticized the recent tragic events in Benue and Plateau States, calling them stark contradictions of the teachings of Christ, especially the values of peace and compassion. He further expressed concern over the rise in provocative statements by political and sectional actors, which, according to him, only widen societal fractures and delay national progress. “True development will not arise from rivalry between regions or groups. We must act as allies, not adversaries,” he emphasized. Legislative Steps Toward National Security The senator revealed that the National Assembly is actively working on legal frameworks to enable the creation of state police forces—a decisive step aimed at addressing Nigeria’s persistent insecurity challenges. He called on security operatives to collaborate across agencies to apprehend those behind terror attacks, stressing that only a unified response can guarantee national safety. A Call for National Rebirth Senator Bamidele warned political figures who exploit the country’s instability for self-serving political agendas. He urged them to emulate Christ’s example of sacrifice and righteousness, rather than sow seeds of discord. “Our nation is a shared endeavor. We must all commit to its growth and healing,” Bamidele said. He reiterated the commitment of the 10th National Assembly to fostering peace and prosperity through meaningful legislative reforms aimed at building a vibrant, inclusive federation. Russia’s Alleged Ceasefire Exposed as Ukraine Reports 387 Shellings – Zelenskyy

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has publicly accused the Russian Federation of staging a deceptive ceasefire during the Easter holiday while continuing aggressive military actions against Ukraine. According to Zelenskyy’s official statement posted on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, the Russian military carried out 387 artillery attacks between Saturday evening and Sunday morning, despite President Vladimir Putin’s announcement of a temporary ceasefire. The Ukrainian President cited a detailed briefing from Commander-in-Chief Syrskyi, which documented 59 separate shellings and 5 direct assaults on multiple frontlines by Russian forces as of 6:00 a.m. Sunday. Additionally, he highlighted that Russian drones were deployed 290 times within the same timeframe. This development starkly contradicts the Kremlin’s public declaration of a ceasefire that was supposed to start at 6:00 p.m. Saturday (4:00 p.m. UK time) and last until Monday, as stated in an update posted on the Kremlin’s official Telegram channel. “The Russian army is trying to fabricate the impression of a ceasefire. In reality, they continue isolated but deadly offensives aimed at destabilizing our defenses,” Zelenskyy said. He emphasized that Russia must fully adhere to any declared ceasefire conditions, asserting that Ukraine had formally proposed a 30-day extension to the ceasefire beginning after midnight. That proposal, he said, remains valid and awaits Moscow’s genuine commitment. Frontline Update: Attacks Continue Despite ‘Truce’ Zelenskyy detailed that: A Pattern of Ceasefire Violations This isn’t the first time Russia has been accused of breaking its own declared ceasefires. Analysts have long observed that such truces are often used as strategic pauses or misinformation tools rather than genuine gestures of peace. For in-depth analysis on the ongoing war and humanitarian needs, read the BBC’s latest update on the Russia-Ukraine conflict. If you’d like to know how to support war-affected communities, visit our article on helping victims of conflict. Conclusion Despite public announcements by President Putin claiming a ceasefire for Easter, facts on the ground reveal continued aggression. Zelenskyy’s administration remains committed to peace but insists on Russia’s accountability in following through on any truce agreement. Zelenskyy Cautioned Over Controversial US-Ukraine Mineral Deal

A senior Ukrainian economist, Volodymyr Landa, affiliated with the Centre for Economic Strategy in Kyiv, has raised concerns regarding the US-Ukraine mineral agreement, describing it as both “unfair” and “unrealistic.” His remarks were published in a Guardian UK report. Landa highlighted that the proposed mineral accord has undergone several changes and remains vague in terms of its core content. He said, “It’s hard to say what’s inside,” implying that the agreement lacks transparency and definitive structure. Zelenskyy Pushes for Equal Partnership Terms Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is working to improve diplomatic and economic ties with the United States, especially in the context of resource development. However, he has rejected the U.S. condition that funds generated from the new joint mineral resource initiative should be used to offset the cost of military supplies provided by the Biden administration. It’s worth noting that former President Donald Trump had publicly claimed that Ukraine owed the U.S. $300 billion, sparking international debate on the matter. In response, President Zelenskyy reaffirmed that the aid received was granted by Congress with bipartisan approval and was not meant to be repaid. He emphasized that future collaborations must be equitable and beneficial to both nations, advocating for a “parity-based” partnership. “Our cooperation must not be framed in debt but in shared prosperity and fairness,” Zelenskyy stated in a recent press briefing. Global Economic Repercussions Feared Landa warned that forcing Ukraine to treat previously non-refundable aid as debt could lead to serious global economic implications. “If it suddenly becomes acceptable to convert unconditional support into retroactive debt, it may damage financial trust worldwide,” he noted. Such a precedent could discourage nations and international organizations from offering grants in the future, knowing they might later be held liable for repayment. This could reopen long-settled geopolitical and economic issues, setting a dangerous standard for international aid and partnerships. Zelenskyy Says Putin’s Easter Ceasefire Fails to Halt Clashes in Russian Border Areas

LMSINT MEDIA reports that hostilities persist in Russia’s border territories of Kursk and Belgorod, despite President Vladimir Putin’s declaration of an Easter ceasefire. This was disclosed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who stated that combat is still active in those regions, suggesting that Putin’s call for peace has not been implemented locally. “Kursk and Belgorod regions – Putin’s Easter statements did not spread to this territory. Fighting continues, Russian strikes continue,” Zelenskyy posted on his official social media handle. The Ukrainian president did not offer verifiable proof to support his assertion, but the situation raises concerns about the effectiveness and reach of the Kremlin’s ceasefire announcement. Putin’s ceasefire proposal, announced earlier on Orthodox Easter Saturday, was meant to last for 30 hours, aligning with the sacred observance. However, the lack of calm in certain Russian border regions suggests either a breakdown in communication or deliberate noncompliance from forces on the ground. According to a report by Reuters (external link), the Russian leader’s gesture aimed to show goodwill amid stalled diplomatic efforts. The United States had also warned it might walk away from ongoing peace negotiations if visible steps toward ending the war are not made soon by both Moscow and Kyiv. Why It Matters This development complicates the fragile state of peace talks and highlights the disconnect between public political declarations and military realities. If Putin’s ceasefire fails to hold even within Russian territory, it raises questions about how effective future negotiations can be. North Korea Condemns US Weapons Export Policy, Labels It a Threat to Global Peace

In a fiery reaction to recent developments, North Korea has strongly criticized the United States’ decision to ease its weapons export restrictions, describing the move as a direct provocation that could escalate international conflicts. The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), in a statement published Sunday, accused the US of adopting double standards—preaching peace while supplying advanced weaponry worldwide. According to the report, Washington is acting as a deceptive peacemaker, pretending to support diplomatic dialogue while simultaneously arming nations with potentially destructive weapons systems. “The US claims to promote peace, but continues to supply arms to conflict regions, thus fueling war and instability,” the KCNA report emphasized. The backlash follows an executive order signed by former President Donald Trump on April 9, which officially reduced restrictions on the export of US-made military equipment. This development comes amid ongoing global concerns about arms proliferation, particularly in sensitive regions such as Eastern Europe. While the US administration has shown support for mediation efforts between Ukraine and Russia, critics argue that the relaxed export policy contradicts those peace initiatives. The KCNA condemned what it called “warmonger encouragement,” accusing Washington of enabling prolonged conflict under the guise of negotiation. For more context on the United States’ arms export policy, you can review this official fact sheet from the US Department of State. Global Reactions and Potential Consequences Analysts suggest that such decisions could further deteriorate US-North Korea relations, already strained by military drills, nuclear concerns, and past sanctions. Countries and advocacy groups worldwide have also raised ethical and humanitarian concerns regarding arms trade expansion. The international community continues to monitor these developments closely, given their potential to destabilize fragile regions and undermine global peace-building efforts. Rising Use of Traditional Birth Control Methods in Akwa Ibom Sparks Health Concerns

A growing number of women in Akwa Ibom State are increasingly relying on traditional family planning methods despite clear warnings from health experts about the potential risks. This trend has alarmed reproductive health advocates and exposed systemic issues in the availability of modern contraceptives. According to Enobong Eshiet, the state’s Family Planning Coordinator, many women are resorting to non-medical techniques such as herbal concoctions, withdrawal methods, and in severe cases, unsafe abortions. These practices, while widely used, are unregulated and often lead to dire health consequences, including permanent infertility and internal organ damage. Alarming Statistics Highlight the Shift During a media roundtable in Uyo, Ekomobong Oton, a Technical Lead at The Challenge Initiative (TCI), shared findings from the Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS). She revealed that: This significant decline is directly linked to stockouts and lack of access to modern family planning commodities across healthcare centers in the state. Health Facility Shortages Deepen the Crisis A recent TCI quality implementation assessment revealed that 13 out of 15 health centers in eight local government areas reported stockouts of essential contraceptives like Microgynon, IUDs, condoms, Jadelle, and Implanon. The few available products were largely provided by partners like TCI, whose continued support is not guaranteed. Furthermore, international aid, particularly from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), has dwindled. As noted by KFF Global Health Policy, USAID has scaled back funding to many African nations, including Nigeria, for family planning support. Akwa Ibom’s Budget Gaps and Inaction Despite being an oil-producing state, Akwa Ibom has yet to allocate funds directly for the procurement of family planning commodities. Although proposed budgets have included funding—such as the N100 million proposed last year—there has been no actual disbursement. According to Enobong Eshiet, despite efforts since 2022, including guidelines introduced by the Federal Ministry of Health and supported by UNFPA, Akwa Ibom has not released funds for purchasing and distributing contraceptives. Other States Taking the Lead In contrast, 11 states have implemented the State Funded Procurement Guidelines in line with Nigeria’s FP2030 commitments. These include: Yet, Akwa Ibom remains absent from this list, indicating a lack of prioritization in reproductive health investment. Government Promises Renewed Commitment Following sustained advocacy by the Ibom Advocacy Core Group, the Akwa Ibom Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ekem Emmanuel, assured that family planning funding will be captured in future budgets. He emphasized the governor’s commitment to health and promised that budgeted funds would be followed up for release. Chairperson Dr. Mandu Ekpenyong urged the state to join the National Basket Fund and show more ownership over the work done by NGOs such as TCI, especially as the organization may soon exit the state. Conclusion: Urgent Action Required The surge in traditional birth control usage among Akwa Ibom women highlights not only health risks but also structural weaknesses in reproductive healthcare delivery. With declining international support and increasing demand, state governments must step in to ensure women have safe, modern, and accessible contraceptive options. Easter Message: EFCC Chairman Olukoyede Urges Christians to Renew Commitment to Anti-Corruption Ideals

As the world celebrates the Easter season, the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has called on Christians across Nigeria to embrace the true spirit of the occasion—renewal, sacrifice, and integrity—as essential tools for fighting corruption and fostering national growth. This heartfelt message was conveyed through a press statement issued by Dele Oyewale, Head of Media and Publicity at the EFCC, on Saturday, April 19. Olukoyede emphasized that the message of Easter—which centers on renewal and restoration—should inspire believers to recommit themselves to the values of honesty, ethical leadership, and transparency. According to him, these values are critical in overcoming the deep-rooted issues of financial mismanagement and public sector corruption in Nigeria. “The Easter season is a divine reminder of renewal, revival, and sacrifice. Let it ignite in us the moral strength to uphold integrity and transparency for the progress of our nation,” Olukoyede stated. He urged Christians to reflect deeply on the suffering and resurrection of Jesus Christ, noting that Christ’s sacrificial life is a model for responsible citizenship and service. “Nation-building requires each of us to go beyond comfort zones, making sacrifices for the collective good. Integrity must be at the heart of everything we do,” he added. Mr. Olukoyede expressed his full support for President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, stating that it aligns with the Christian themes of resurrection and revival. He reassured Nigerians that the EFCC remains fully committed to stamping out corruption, urging all stakeholders and citizens not to relent in their support for this mission. “With our hands firmly on the plough, there’s no turning back.
