Saudi Arabia and Qatar have jointly clarified their decision to clear Syria’s overdue debt to the World Bank, totaling approximately $15 million, according to an official statement released by the Saudi Press Agency. The initiative, they explained, aims to assist Syria’s fragile economy in recovering after years of devastating conflict. Both Gulf nations have increasingly engaged with Syria’s newly established interim government following the overthrow of longtime president Bashar al-Assad in December. The ministries of finance from both Saudi Arabia and Qatar confirmed their collaborative effort to resolve Syria’s outstanding financial obligations to the World Bank Group. “The ministries of finance in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the State of Qatar jointly announce their commitment to settle Syria’s outstanding arrears to the World Bank Group, totaling around $15 million,” the joint statement emphasized on Sunday. The announcement came shortly after Syrian officials, including the central bank governor and finance minister, attended the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank spring meetings for the first time in over two decades — a significant diplomatic milestone. The World Bank had previously halted its operations in Syria following the outbreak of civil unrest during the Arab Spring protests in 2011. The country’s conflict spiraled into a prolonged war, isolating it from much-needed international financial assistance. By addressing Syria’s arrears, Saudi Arabia and Qatar are facilitating the country’s re-engagement with the World Bank. This move will enable Syria to access financial assistance and technical expertise vital for rebuilding critical sectors, including healthcare, education, and infrastructure. According to the Saudi Press Agency, “This commitment will pave the way for the World Bank Group to resume support and operations in Syria after a suspension of more than 14 years. It will also unlock Syria’s access to financial support in the near term for the development of critical sectors.” LMSINT MEDIA earlier reported that President Bashar al-Assad was overthrown last December during a swift campaign led by the opposition group Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, marking a turning point in Syria’s political landscape. The settlement of Syria’s World Bank debt marks a crucial step towards the country’s economic reintegration and reconstruction efforts, backed by strong regional support. A devastating incident unfolded at the Lapu Lapu Festival in Vancouver, leaving at least 11 people dead and dozens severely injured after a driver deliberately rammed into a crowd. The tragedy occurred on Saturday evening, coinciding with the eve of Canada’s national elections. In a heartfelt address, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed profound sorrow, describing the nation as “shocked, devastated, and heartbroken” by the catastrophic event. Vancouver’s Police Chief, Steve Rai, called the occurrence “the darkest day” in the city’s history. Speaking to the press, he emphasized, “It’s impossible to overstate how many lives have been forever changed by the actions of a lone individual.” Mayor Ken Sim responded by initiating a thorough review of Vancouver’s event security strategies, focusing on areas such as barriers, traffic regulation, and emergency protocols to prevent future occurrences. The Lapu Lapu Festival had drawn a massive crowd of nearly 100,000 participants, including numerous families with young children. The event featured a vibrant street parade, local artisan markets, cultural exhibitions, a basketball tournament, and an array of food vendors showcasing diverse cuisine. Prime Minister Carney suspended his election campaign activities to address the nation on Sunday morning. During his speech, he stated, “Those families are enduring every family’s worst nightmare. All Canadians stand with you in mourning. We must harness the spirit of unity during this incredibly challenging time. We will grieve together, support each other, and move forward with collective strength.” Carney further assured the public that based on intelligence briefings, the attack appeared to be an isolated act, and there was no ongoing threat to public safety. RJ Aquino, chairperson of the Filipino BC, the organization behind the festival, described the night as “extremely painful” and predicted that the community would carry the emotional scars for a long time. According to Statistics Canada (external source), Vancouver’s Filipino community numbered over 38,600 in 2021, representing about 5.9% of the city’s total population, highlighting the significant cultural ties to events like the Lapu Lapu Festival. United States President Donald Trump has unveiled new insights into his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, which occurred during the burial ceremony of Pope Francis at the Vatican last Friday. According to Trump, Zelenskyy pressed for additional military assistance from the United States to bolster Ukraine’s defenses amid the ongoing conflict with Russia. Speaking to the media on Sunday, Trump expressed empathy for the Ukrainian leader, acknowledging that Zelenskyy is “striving to do the right thing for his nation” and “putting in tremendous effort.” Photos from the Vatican meeting captured both leaders engaged in serious conversation, with Trump later reflecting on their discussions about the Russia-Ukraine war. Trump shared his disappointment over Russia’s missile attacks on Ukraine despite prior diplomatic negotiations involving Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump’s peace envoy, Steve Witkoff. “I was genuinely disappointed to see missiles raining down from Russia,” Trump stated. Despite Zelenskyy’s appeal for more arms, Trump appeared reluctant to make further commitments. While speaking to reporters at a New Jersey airport, Trump said, “Zelenskyy told me again that he needs more weapons — but honestly, he’s been repeating that request for over three years.” Trump reiterated his vision for peace between Ukraine and Russia, emphasizing, “I want Putin to stop the attacks, sit down, and finalize the agreement. We have a draft framework already. It’s time for him to sign and end the bloodshed.” When asked whether he trusts Putin, Trump responded cautiously, “Give me about two weeks — or less — to determine that. But they are losing thousands weekly.” On his relationship with President Zelenskyy, Trump maintained that their bond remains intact, despite minor disagreements in the past. “We had a small dispute during a public event, but it was no big issue. I respect the situation he’s in — facing a massive adversary. He seems more composed now, and I believe he truly wants to broker peace.” The situation in Eastern Europe remains tense as both sides grapple with immense human and material losses. Efforts to broker a sustainable peace deal continue, with international observers hoping for a breakthrough soon. Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has raised serious concerns regarding the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) schedule, accusing the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) of endangering young candidates with their early start times. LMSINT MEDIA confirms that the 2025 UTME officially began on Thursday, April 24, 2025, and will run until Monday, May 5, 2025. In a heartfelt statement released on Sunday, Obi criticized the requirement for teenagers, mostly between the ages of 15 and 17, to be present at exam centers as early as 6:30 am. He described the policy as irresponsible and risky. “Teenagers are being compelled to travel through unsafe and unfamiliar territories during dangerous early morning hours just to attend an exam that determines their future,” Obi lamented. The former governor of Anambra State emphasized the dangers involved, citing cases of students encountering road accidents, going missing, and facing severe psychological stress during the examination period. He questioned, “Who will be held accountable when a 15 or 16-year-old child is harmed or vanishes while attempting to access basic educational rights?” Obi linked the troubling situation to the broader challenges facing Nigeria’s education sector, especially the inadequate number of institutions relative to the nation’s massive population. He pointed out: “Nigeria has around 200 universities for over 200 million citizens — roughly one university per million people — a statistic that is deeply concerning.” Comparing Nigeria’s gross enrollment rate of about 12% to Indonesia’s 45%, Obi highlighted that Indonesia, with a population of 280 million, boasts over 4,000 tertiary institutions (World Bank Data). He urged the Nigerian government to substantially invest in expanding educational infrastructure. Obi proposed that achieving at least half of Indonesia’s number — approximately 2,000 universities — would greatly enhance accessibility and safety for students. In light of a teenage girl reportedly going missing en route to a UTME center in Ajah, Lagos, the urgency of Obi’s concerns is undeniable. Meanwhile, JAMB responded by clarifying that there is a difference between pre-test verification processes and the actual start time for the UTME exams. Obi concluded by stressing the need for a deliberate overhaul of Nigeria’s education system to safeguard the youth and foster national development. Pastor Chris Oyakhilome DSc DSc DD Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints (Ephesians 6:18). Praying in the Spirit is the primary way for Christians to pray; it means praying in other tongues. When you pray in tongues, it’s your spirit praying, even though your understanding is unfruitful. Thus, the spiritual man prays first with the spirit and then with the understanding also. Sadly, many reverse this order; they pray predominantly with their understanding and sparingly in tongues. That’s not going to work. Recall what we read in our opening scripture; it means there’re different kinds or forms of prayer. However, irrespective or alongside all these various types of prayers, you should pray in the Spirit, that is, pray in other tongues. Think of this like a doctor’s prescription that says, “Take these tablets with every meal.” Now, breakfast, lunch and dinner are different meals, yet the tablets are a constant addition to each. Similarly, God says, with all types of prayer—be it the prayer of intercession, prayer of faith, prayer of worship, etc.—pray in the Spirit. Speak in tongues. The apostle Paul sheds light on this in 1 Corinthians 14:14-15: “For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also….” 1 Corinthians 14:2 says, “For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.” Make this a priority in your life. Cultivate the habit of praying in tongues every day, and you’ll experience extraordinary victories in your life. Your spiritual walk will be transformed and you’ll always be steps ahead of trouble before they manifest. Plus that, your health will blossom supernaturally as your physical body is constantly vitalized and rejuvenated by doses of divine currents, through praying in the Spirit. PRAYERDear Father, thank you for the privilege of prayer and the opportunity it gives us to invoke heaven’s blessings on earth. As I pray in the Spirit, my spirit is aligned with your divine purpose. Thank you for the victories I experience through this spiritual discipline, and for enabling me to fulfil my role as a watchman in your Kingdom, in Jesus’ Name. Amen. Far above all principality, power, might, dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world but also in that which is to come! I am exalted with Christ in glory; I know who I am: chosen, royal, and peculiar! I experience the supernatural in my body every day by the power of God’s Spirit. I recognize the divine ability, efficiency, and might that are at work in me today. By virtue of the divine life of Christ in me, every cell of my blood, every bone of my body, and every organ in me is invigorated; no infirmity can fasten itself to my body, I live in absolute health and soundness of mind and body. I have a sharp memory and a firm capacity to remember important details, experiences and knowledge. My mental acuity and my cognitive abilities are top-notch. I am born of God, therefore, fear has no place in my life. I am perceptive, astute and smart. I am confident, bold and courageous. I will never walk in confusion because the Spirit of God is guiding me in the path of life and leading me in the way of supernatural success and permanent prosperity. I make my way prosperous and consistently experience good success as I meditate on the Word and speak it forth with boldness. I am guided and propelled by God’s divine wisdom to do His will and fulfil my destiny in Christ. My eyes of understanding are enlightened; I see the invisible and I’m empowered to do the impossible. My life goes only in the direction of God’s purpose; therefore, I’ll never be sick in life. I can only grow from strength to strength, for divinity has been activated in my body in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. Speak in tongues. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) successfully secured approximately N1.008 trillion during its most recent Open Market Operations (OMO) auction conducted on Friday, April 25, 2025. Driven by robust investor interest, the auction witnessed an impressive oversubscription of 102%, reflecting heightened appetite for high-yield government securities in response to escalating inflation and expanding liquidity in the Nigerian economy. CBN data revealed that the apex financial institution initially proposed N500 billion worth of offerings across two tenors. However, total bids surged close to N1.4 trillion, underscoring aggressive participation from investors eager to capitalize on elevated returns. This strategic move aligns with the CBN’s ongoing commitment to tighten monetary policy, targeting the absorption of surplus liquidity and curbing stubborn inflationary trends, even as Nigeria grapples with high interest rates and a historic cash reserve ratio. Key Highlights from the Auction Overall, the Central Bank managed to raise more than double its initial auction target, solidifying its aggressive liquidity management approach amidst ongoing economic pressures. Why Investor Appetite is Growing The soaring subscription rates point to investors’ strategic shift toward risk-free, high-yield instruments, especially as Nigeria’s inflation rate continues to surge. Analysts suggest that as the money supply expands, opportunities for safer, inflation-beating returns become increasingly attractive (Source). The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Olayemi Cardoso, has emphasized that the economic reforms initiated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, although challenging, are beginning to yield meaningful results. Cardoso made this assertion following the conclusion of the 2025 IMF/World Bank Spring Meetings held in Washington, D.C., United States. According to a statement released by the Nigerian delegation, the meetings served as an opportunity to present the ongoing economic policies and achievements under President Tinubu’s leadership. He stated, “Thanks to the actions taken over the past eighteen months, Nigeria has fortified its monetary reserves and is now better positioned to handle external financial pressures.” Addressing citizens directly, Cardoso acknowledged the difficulties Nigerians are facing due to these reforms but assured that tangible benefits are becoming evident. “These reforms are tough, but they are delivering tangible outcomes. Nigeria is shifting from a vulnerable state toward a trajectory of economic resilience and growth,” he noted. It is important to remember that since 2023, President Tinubu’s administration has implemented several pivotal measures, including the liberalization of the foreign exchange market and the controversial removal of fuel subsidies — policies that initially triggered inflationary pressures across the nation. In alignment with these initiatives, Cardoso introduced major financial sector reforms such as the launch of the Electronic Foreign Exchange Management System (EFEMS), the introduction of a new FX code, and the recapitalization of banks, aimed at fortifying Nigeria’s financial stability. Recent economic indicators suggest a gradual improvement. Nigeria’s inflation rate eased to 23.18% in March 2025, while the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) was adjusted to 27.50% in February 2025, indicating cautious optimism amidst ongoing challenges, including the high cost of living. In a decisive step to address rising security concerns affecting schools in Nigeria, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has officially inaugurated the School Protection Squad (SPS) in Edo State. The launch, held on Friday, April 25, 2025, is aimed at establishing safer educational spaces for both learners and educators. The initiative, described as a landmark achievement, reflects the Nigeria Police Force’s proactive stance on enhancing the security architecture in the country’s learning environments. Represented by AIG Zone 5, Benin, Salman Garba-Dogo, the IGP emphasized that the SPS is not only a rapid response team but also a unit built for community integration and preventive action. Building Trust Through Engagement and Vigilance According to Egbetokun, the SPS officers will play a multifaceted role in ensuring school safety. Their core mandate includes assessing potential threats, responding swiftly to incidents, fostering trust with students and staff, and educating the school community about personal safety and emergency awareness. “This goes beyond physical protection — we are fostering emotional assurance and a sense of security among students, teachers, and parents. Every child deserves to learn without fear,” said Egbetokun. The Inspector General further disclosed that the program is a collaborative effort involving the Ministry of Education, school administrators, and Parent-Teacher Associations. The goal is to make school safety a collective responsibility through continuous engagement and awareness campaigns. Edo Government Backs Federal School Safety Vision Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State, represented by Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa, expressed the state’s full support for the national school protection initiative. He highlighted that ensuring the security of children in educational institutions is pivotal to Nigeria’s development. The governor’s office has already initiated several safety-enhancing actions, such as constructing perimeter fencing around schools, deploying the state security corps to rural areas, and integrating mandatory guidance and counseling services within schools. “Education is the bedrock of our future. To protect it, we must face the challenges threatening our schools head-on with a united and strategic approach,” he noted. Training and Rapid Response Mechanism National Coordinator of the SPS and Commissioner of Police, Abayomi Shogunle, elaborated on the operational strategy of the unit. Over 65 trained police officers across Edo State’s three senatorial zones will engage in school safety awareness campaigns, emergency drills, and real-time response to threats. He added that a dedicated 24/7 call center has been set up to handle distress calls from students, teachers, parents, and community members across the country, ensuring timely intervention. “Prevention is more cost-effective and impactful than reaction. Our focus is to build a sustainable peace infrastructure around schools,” Shogunle affirmed. The stakeholders’ meeting held in Benin City had the theme: “Strengthening Security Resilience and Integration of Host Communities in the Protection of Education.” It brought together law enforcement, education officials, community leaders, and parents in a united front to reinforce Nigeria’s educational landscape against insecurity.
