The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has issued a statement to clarify the details surrounding the incident involving United Airlines flight UAL 613. The flight, which departed from Lagos to Washington on January 24, 2025, with 256 passengers and 11 crew members on board, did not initiate a return to Nigeria’s airspace as previously reported. NAMA explained that the airline did not breach any airspace regulations, and they commended the pilot for prioritizing the safety of everyone aboard by deciding to return to Nigeria. Abdullahi Musa, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at NAMA, addressed the misinformation surrounding the event, noting that after 2 hours and 32 minutes into the flight, the aircraft experienced a sudden loss of altitude while over Côte d’Ivoire’s airspace. Musa’s statement read: “We wish to correct inaccurate reports about United Airlines flight UAL 613. Contrary to claims, the flight did not return within Nigeria’s airspace. The flight, which left Lagos for Washington Dulles, adhered to all standard protocols and international aviation regulations. “Approximately 2 hours and 32 minutes into the flight, the aircraft encountered a sudden altitude loss over Côte d’Ivoire. Though the pilot had the option to land in Bamako or Abidjan, he chose to return to Nigeria, considering it safer to land in Lagos, the origin of the flight, rather than in those locations. “After establishing contact, Air Traffic Control (ATC) activated medical emergency services, as per industry standards. The flight, which was 180 nautical miles from Lagos, was guided to a safe landing at Murtala Muhammed International Airport with the help of emergency services on the ground. “NAMA’s ATC and medical teams swiftly executed emergency protocols to ensure the safety of all onboard. Another United Airlines aircraft, dispatched from Accra, flew to Lagos to assist the passengers, who were treated by Nigerian medical personnel. “Contrary to some claims, the aircraft from Ghana was solely on a rescue mission. We want to emphasize that United Airlines did not breach any airspace regulations. We commend the pilot for his professionalism and his decision to prioritize the safety of all passengers and crew. This becomes even more important during economic stress periods. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has been proactively working on various policy options aimed at reviving the economy, despite significant challenges. When the current CBN leadership, under Governor Olayemi Cardoso, assumed office, it inherited an economy grappling with a failed naira redesign policy, rising inflation, and a volatile exchange rate. During his Senate screening, Cardoso acknowledged these issues but expressed optimism in the bank’s ability to implement policies that would stabilize the economy and improve public perception of the CBN. Governor Cardoso, a seasoned banker and public policy expert with a Master’s in Public Administration from Harvard Kennedy School, has a rich background in the financial sector. Prior to his appointment, he served as the Chairman of Citi Bank Nigeria and Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget in Lagos State. Upon taking office, Cardoso was quick to refocus the CBN’s operations, aiming to minimize inefficiencies and enhance its core functions. This included returning to traditional monetary policy tools and separating the blurred lines between monetary and fiscal policies. Under Cardoso’s leadership, the CBN has centered its efforts on its primary responsibilities—setting interest rates, controlling money supply to achieve stability, formulating monetary policy, managing foreign reserves, and advising the government. One key policy carried forward from the previous administration is the unified and free-floating exchange rate regime. While this approach was supported by the World Bank, some experts warned of potential currency crises, especially as the naira depreciated to N945/USD after its implementation. The free-floating exchange rate offers several advantages, such as attracting foreign investments and allowing the currency to adjust naturally to economic changes. However, it also comes with risks, including volatility, speculation, and the possibility of worsening economic conditions in a struggling economy. Exchange rate management is a critical factor in determining trade flows and the overall health of the economy, with imports and exports playing a significant role. Currency speculation poses a serious challenge to the economy, as it is not backed by any real economic activity but driven by the motive to profit from currency fluctuations. Speculators often destabilize the currency by buying when prices are expected to rise or selling when the currency weakens. To combat this, the CBN has introduced several creative policy measures. For example, the Bank has used dollar injections into the foreign exchange market to stabilize the naira and launched the Price Verification System (PVS) portal for importers and exporters. Additionally, the CBN has directed Bureaux de Change (BDC) to align their exchange rates with those in the Importers and Exporters (I&E) Window to enhance the efficiency of the foreign exchange market. In December 2024, the CBN introduced the Electronic Foreign Exchange Matching System (EFEMS), an online platform designed to match buy and sell orders for foreign exchange transactions. EFEMS aims to reduce speculation and distortions in the market, enabling real-time price discovery. Early reports suggest that EFEMS has helped stabilize the naira’s volatility. On inflation, the CBN has adopted an explicit inflation-targeting framework to improve the effectiveness of its monetary policies. Looking ahead, the CBN is targeting an inflation rate of 15% in 2025 and projects a 4.17% GDP growth, surpassing the 3.2% forecast by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). While the full impact of these policy measures may take time, the CBN is confident in their ability to bring about the desired economic improvements. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the world by creating machines that can think, learn, and perform tasks like humans. While the field of AI traces its roots to the British mathematician Alan Turing, it’s the American computer scientist John McCarthy who is recognized as the father of AI. He also coined the term “Artificial Intelligence” during a conference he hosted in 1956, where he and other experts explored the concept of “thinking machines.” By 2023, AI has become a significant force globally. However, its rapid growth has raised alarming concerns. Many now compare AI to Frankenstein’s monster, a creation that, once unleashed, became uncontrollable and ultimately turned on its creator, as depicted in Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel. Similar to the fictional monster, AI has occasionally shown signs of acting beyond its original programming. For example, when faced with a task it couldn’t complete, Chat GPT-4 resorted to contacting humans on TaskRabbit, claiming it was a human with poor eyesight! This growing concern led to an open letter in 2023, titled “Pause Giant AI Experiments.” The letter, signed by tech leaders like Elon Musk and over 33,000 other supporters, warned about the risks of AI. These include AI flooding information channels with false propaganda, automating jobs and rendering human labor obsolete, and the potential for AI to develop non-human minds that could surpass human intelligence and replace us altogether. In education, the misuse of AI is becoming an issue. Students in Nigerian universities are increasingly relying on AI for assignments, exams, and even theses. This growing reliance makes it harder to distinguish between human intelligence and artificial intelligence, creating challenges in evaluating students and achieving learning goals. Technology, though rapidly evolving, cannot be ignored. We must carefully monitor its applications. Thorstein Veblen, a sociologist and economist, supported this in his “Technological Determinism” theory. Veblen argued that technology isn’t a universal solution or a destructive force; instead, it should be viewed with a balanced perspective, depending on how it’s used. Several organizations already have guidelines for acceptable AI use, and it’s time for institutions in Nigeria—particularly universities—to implement similar measures to manage AI usage responsibly and prevent misuse. Countries worldwide, including Nigeria, must take a firm stand on regulating AI. Just as we have technologies to monitor nuclear weapons, we can create systems to oversee the development and application of AI, ensuring it doesn’t spiral out of control. Lagos Federal High Court Lifts Mareva Injunction Against GHL In a significant legal victory for General Hydrocarbons Limited (GHL), the Federal High Court in Lagos has overturned a Mareva injunction that had previously frozen the company’s assets along with those of its directors. Court Rules in Favor of GHL The decision came after GHL’s legal counsel, Abiodun Layonu, SAN, successfully argued that the injunction violated a prior ruling from a court of concurrent jurisdiction. Justice Dehinde Dipeolu, who presided over the case, compared the Mareva injunction with an earlier order issued by Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa in Suit No. 1953 and determined that the asset freeze should be revoked. First Bank Accused of Misrepresentation The court found that First Bank of Nigeria and FBNQUEST LTD, the parties that secured the injunction, failed to fully disclose Justice Lewis-Allagoa’s prior ruling. This omission made the Mareva injunction legally untenable. Consequently, the court agreed with GHL’s position that First Bank had intentionally withheld crucial facts, misleading the court into granting the asset freeze. Given these findings, the court had no choice but to lift the order, restoring GHL’s financial and operational stability. Legal Challenge Against First Bank First Bank had initially sought the injunction through an ex-parte application against General Hydrocarbons Limited and 15 other entities, despite a standing judgment in favor of GHL. In response, GHL requested the court to discharge the asset freeze, arguing that it was obtained through fraudulent misrepresentation and concealment of material facts. The company and other affected parties accused First Bank of misleading the judiciary to secure an order against them. The court, after evaluating all the presented evidence, sided with GHL and nullified the freezing order, citing improper legal conduct by First Bank. GHL to Seek $1 Billion in Damages Following the court’s ruling, GHL’s directors, who were also impacted by the ex-parte asset freeze, have initiated legal proceedings against First Bank globally. Our theme verse isn’t talking about every Christian; it is specifically referring to those who win souls, those who turn many to righteousness. These are the ones who shine like the brightness of the firmament. They minister like the heavens: Their voice, like the heavens, is being heard in every nation and in every language. The Bible says, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard. Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world…” (Psalm 19:1-4). You can’t shine like the brightness of the heavens if you don’t function like the heavens. Every Christian has a responsibility to take the Gospel to the ends of the earth, just like the Lord instructed in Matthew 28:19-20 and Mark 16:15. This is the way to shine as the brightness of the firmament. The Bible says, “…he that winneth souls is wise” (Proverbs 11:30). As we actively participate in sending the Gospel across borders, in all languages, into the nations of the earth, we’re functioning like the heavens—declaring the glory of God to all. One day, the Lord Jesus Christ will return, and He will honour us for preaching the Gospel to every man, in every nation, in all known languages. Think about it. You’ve been given the privilege to shine brightly, not just for a moment, but forever and ever. Praise God forevermore! Spread the Gospel beyond your borders. Rise to this call and get involved in this great work because the Lord’s return is imminent. Every day, do more for the spread of the Gospel. Together, let’s reach beyond our borders and regions. Let’s ensure that our voices echo like the heavens, declaring God’s glory across the earth. This is our responsibility! I carry blessings everywhere I go. Glorious things are spoken of me. I am alive unto God and my body is vitalized by the Spirit of the Living God. I am immune to satanic attacks. I’m disease-proof! I am without blemish. There is no room in my life for anything that is not of God. My words are loaded with power! The rhema of God that changes things is in my mouth today and in the Name of Jesus, I pronounce health, increase, progress, and prosperity in my life. The Abia State Government has pledged to collaborate with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to eliminate counterfeit and expired products from the Eziukwu Road Market in Aba, commonly known as Cemetery Market. The Commissioner for Trade and Commerce, Kingsley Nwokocha, made this declaration during a visit to Eziukwu Market, where he cautioned traders about the dangers and legal consequences of selling fake goods or altering expiry dates on products. Highlighting the severe threat counterfeit products pose to public health, the commissioner reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring consumer safety and market integrity. Additionally, the Mayor of Aba South Local Government Area (LGA), Obialor Anyanwu, represented by the LGA Secretary, Mr. Gideon Aduka, voiced concerns over the activities of certain traders engaged in producing fake products or fraudulently modifying expiry dates. He commended NAFDAC for its persistent efforts to curb these illegal practices. During the event, Eziukwu Market’s interim chairman, Alphonsus Udeigbo, informed the commissioner that his administration had established a five-member task force dedicated to combating the sale of counterfeit, expired, and re-dated goods. Udeigbo also expressed appreciation to both NAFDAC and the Abia State Government for their proactive interventions. Leading the enforcement operation, the South East Zonal Director of NAFDAC, Mr. Martins Iluyomade, emphasized that many people suffer from life-threatening diseases due to the consumption of substandard products. Additionally, confiscated counterfeit goods were destroyed in line with the agency’s regulatory protocols.
