In a recent media briefing in Benin City, Senator Neda Imasuen, who represents Edo South in Nigeria’s National Assembly under the Labour Party, called on Northern politicians eyeing the 2027 presidency to honor the informal zoning tradition and allow the South complete its eight-year tenure.
Imasuen emphasized the importance of respecting the longstanding, though unwritten, agreement that power should rotate between the Northern and Southern regions of the country every eight years.
“This arrangement, though unwritten, reflects Nigeria’s unity and equity. The North had its turn for eight years under President Muhammadu Buhari. Now it’s time for the South to finish its eight years,” he stated.
He further argued that any disruption of this balance could spark political tension, warning that southern Nigerians expect to retain the presidency until 2031.
Defending Tinubu’s Presidency and Reforms
Senator Imasuen, who also chairs the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions, offered strong support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He commended Tinubu’s resilience and determination, especially in pushing forward controversial reforms like the tax bill recently passed by the National Assembly.
“The President’s insistence on doing what’s right, even at the risk of losing political support, shows courage,” Imasuen noted. “Despite intense opposition, he stood by his policies and saw them through.”
This stance, according to Imasuen, sets Tinubu apart from past leaders who often compromised national progress for political gain.
Call for a Credible Census: A Bold Step
He also applauded President Tinubu’s resolve to carry out a comprehensive population census—a politically sensitive issue in Nigeria. Imasuen said Tinubu’s readiness to tackle the matter reflects his leadership strength.
“Most leaders avoid the census topic because of its complexity, especially considering the North’s large population. But Tinubu is boldly confronting it for national clarity,” he said.

Reiterating his position on the 2027 presidential election, Imasuen urged Northern stakeholders to show the same restraint they did during Buhari’s tenure.
“Nobody interrupted Buhari’s full eight years, despite dissatisfaction. So the South deserves the same courtesy with President Tinubu,” he stressed.
