NDLEA Sensitises Abia Traders Against Drug Abuse and Trafficking

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Abia State Command, has intensified its campaign against drug abuse and illicit trafficking through a sensitisation programme conducted at the Ehere Electronic Market, located in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State.

This awareness initiative forms part of the agency’s continuous efforts aimed at reducing the prevalence of drug abuse and preventing the circulation of illegal narcotics within communities across the state.

The sensitisation exercise was spearheaded by Assistant Commander of Narcotics (ACN) Frank Nwaohamou, with the support of other NDLEA officers. The programme specifically targeted traders operating within the Ehere Electronic Market, recognising the importance of engaging business communities in the fight against drug-related activities.

While addressing the traders, ACN Nwaohamou cautioned them on the serious dangers linked to drug abuse and the unlawful trafficking of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances. He emphasised that involvement in such activities poses significant risks, not only to individuals but also to the stability and safety of the wider society.

During the interactive session, NDLEA officers explained the social, health, and economic consequences associated with drug abuse. They noted that substance abuse can lead to severe health complications, disrupt family structures, reduce productivity, and contribute to rising crime levels within communities. According to the officers, these negative outcomes often affect not just users, but also innocent members of society.

The traders were further educated on the legal consequences of engaging in drug-related offences, including arrest, prosecution, and imprisonment. NDLEA officials encouraged market participants to remain law-abiding and to actively support anti-drug efforts by sharing timely and credible information with relevant law enforcement agencies whenever suspicious activities are observed.

In response, leaders and members of the Ehere Electronic Market expressed appreciation for the sensitisation programme. They collectively pledged their commitment to supporting NDLEA initiatives and promoting a drug-free environment within and around the market.
