NDLEA and UK’s HOIO Sign Strategic MoU to Intensify Cross-Border Drug Trafficking Crackdown

In a significant step toward combating international drug trafficking, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the United Kingdom’s Home Office International Operations (HOIO) have formalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance cooperation in disrupting illicit drug networks between Nigeria and the UK.

The official signing of the agreement took place on Monday, May 26, 2025, at the NDLEA headquarters located in Abuja, marking a milestone in joint international crime-fighting strategies.

During the signing event, Mr. Ian Cunliffe, Regional Manager for West Africa at HOIO, expressed his appreciation for the progress made under his predecessor Christopher Hawksfield, and emphasized his dedication to reinforcing the already fruitful collaboration.

“I extend my gratitude to the chairman for his time and warm reception. The partnership between HOIO and NDLEA has proven highly effective, and I am committed to taking it even further as we embark on this new chapter,” Cunliffe remarked.

In his address, NDLEA Chairman/CEO Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), highlighted that the agreement goes beyond a formal document. Instead, he described it as a symbol of mutual understanding and shared responsibility.

“This agreement demonstrates our enduring commitment to protect the wellbeing and future of our nations,” Marwa said.

He further noted that the agency has been consistently enhancing its drug control strategies in accordance with the National Drug Control Master Plan. The newly signed MoU, he explained, will serve as a robust framework for exchanging intelligence and operational data, all in accordance with national laws, international treaties, and best practices.

“This collaboration enhances our ability to intercept drug traffickers, dismantle international cartels, and trace illegal financial movements with improved precision,” he explained.

Marwa also stressed the importance of intelligence sharing in achieving impactful enforcement results. He expressed confidence that this renewed partnership will solidify mutual efforts in addressing drug-related crimes while safeguarding public safety and health in both Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
