The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has voiced concerns over the escalating rate of flight delays and cancellations in the country. Between September and October 2024, at least 180 flights were canceled, while delays affected thousands more.
Captain Chris Najomo, Acting Director-General of the NCAA, raised the issue during a meeting with airline Chief Executive Officers in Lagos. He criticized the poor handling of flight disruptions by airlines, emphasizing the negative impact on passengers, businesses, and the aviation industry’s reputation.
Najomo revealed alarming statistics: in September 2024, 5,291 domestic flights were scheduled, but 2,434 faced delays, and 79 were canceled. The situation worsened in October 2024, with 5,513 flights operated, 2,791 delayed, and 111 canceled.
Addressing the airlines, Najomo stated, “While delays and cancellations are sometimes unavoidable due to operational, technical, or weather-related challenges, the management of these disruptions must improve. Airlines have a duty to handle such situations professionally and respect passengers’ rights, especially as harmattan weather increasingly disrupts operations.”
The NCAA has reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing passenger rights under the Nigeria Civil Aviation (Consumer Protection) Regulations, 2023. These regulations require airlines to provide accommodations, refreshments, and alternative travel options when disruptions exceed acceptable limits, with compensation offered where necessary.
Najomo also announced that his team would intensify monitoring and impose sanctions on non-compliant airlines. He highlighted the efforts made over the past year, including awareness campaigns and training sessions for airlines and travel agents, to ensure adherence to these regulations.
