The National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) has intensified measures to shield Nigeria from the newly discovered COVID-19 variant, XEC. While no cases of this variant have been reported in the country, the agency is taking proactive steps to ensure public safety.
Enhanced Surveillance at Points of Entry
In a statement released on Monday by Gloria Ogbaki, NBMA’s Head of Information and Public Relations, the agency confirmed it has ramped up monitoring at borders, airports, and other key entry points. This effort aims to detect and prevent the variant from entering Nigeria.
Focus on Vaccination and Public Health Strategies
The NBMA has reinforced vaccination initiatives, urging citizens to stay up to date with their COVID-19 vaccinations and booster doses. The agency also emphasized the importance of public health strategies, such as mask-wearing and maintaining proper hygiene, as critical defenses against any potential outbreak.
Guidance for the Public
Nigerians were encouraged to remain vigilant by:
- Relying only on verified health updates.
- Adhering to preventive measures, including mask-wearing and hand hygiene.
- Seeking immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as fever, cough, shortness of breath, or loss of taste and smell.
Reporting and Cooperation with Health Authorities
The NBMA advised the public to promptly report suspected cases and comply with quarantine or isolation protocols when necessary. Cooperation with health authorities is essential to mitigating the risk of transmission.
