My Parents Branded Me a Failure While I Struggled with Depression – GoodGirl LA

Nigerian singer and songwriter Euphemia Ekumah, professionally known as GoodGirl LA, has candidly revealed the depths of her battle with depression, describing how her experience of isolation ultimately reshaped her life in powerful ways.

The talented vocalist, who had kept a relatively low profile for a while, explained that she was dealing with severe depression alone. However, she found a way to channel this solitude into personal power by embracing self-mastery and practicing transmutation.

Famous for her hit song Bless Me, GoodGirl LA further explained that during that difficult period, she deliberately turned down numerous opportunities that countless other artists would have desperately pursued. Her reason, she explained, was rooted in not wanting to compromise her values or “sell her soul” for superficial success.

She shared that some people labeled her “crazy,” and even her own friends began to belittle her choices and look down on her. Even more painfully, she revealed that her parents went so far as to call her “a failure,” a remark that forced her to reevaluate her priorities and what truly mattered in her life.

Despite facing harsh criticism and rejection from people close to her, the 28-year-old artist declared that her ultimate mission remains making music and inspiring and uplifting lives through her art.

Sharing a series of heartfelt posts on X, GoodGirl LA poured out her experiences, stating:

“I had periods of unavoidable isolation and just shit, so I charged it. I focused on self-mastery and transmutation, all the while saying no to certain opportunities that nggas would kill for because I stand for something. I know what I want and where I’m going, and I won’t sell my soul just to belong and keep up appearances. Nggas called me crazy lol but I am—I’m a f*cking genius.

In that period, my ‘friends’ started to look down on me and pretty much just shenked me. Bruh, even my own parents did too and called me a failure. It changed my view on what’s really important. I’ve seen how the world treats a young girl that’s tryna achieve greatness. The cheers and boos aren’t what any of this is about. It’s really all about art, touching my Gs and the world…”

She emphasized how being misunderstood by those around her — including her own family — was deeply painful but ultimately pushed her to stay authentic to her calling. She expressed that society is often quick to praise or criticize people chasing greatness, but for her, true success is defined by making meaningful art and reaching people on a deeper level.
