Mourinho Explains Why Benfica Knocked Fenerbahce Out of the Champions League

Fenerbahce’s head coach, José Mourinho, has admitted that Portuguese side Benfica secured their UEFA Champions League play-off victory simply because they were the stronger and more experienced team.

On Wednesday night, Benfica defeated Fenerbahce 1-0 in the second-leg clash, which sealed their progression to the Champions League group stage. The result gave Benfica a 1-0 aggregate win, following the goalless first-leg draw last week.

The defeat means that Mourinho’s men will now drop into the UEFA Europa League for this season, a competition where they will attempt to restore pride after missing out on the Champions League.

During his post-match interview, Mourinho was candid in his assessment of the outcome. He acknowledged Benfica’s strength and experience at this stage of European football, while also expressing disappointment at his team’s failure to capitalize on opportunities.

“Benfica is a club that understands the demands of this type of match. Naturally, there is sadness because we wanted to qualify, but I accept that we were beaten by a team superior to us,” Mourinho said.

The Portuguese tactician further explained that Fenerbahce created some promising chances but struggled to make them count. Their task became even harder after they were reduced to ten men, which completely shifted the balance of the game in Benfica’s favor.

“We had opportunities to score, but after the red card, everything became more difficult. The match was practically over. Overall, I think the better team progressed,” he added.
