Weeks after federal and state authorities assured the public of swift repairs on the collapsed Nemnai Bridge in Gassol Local Government Area of Taraba State, the structure remains untouched, raising serious concerns about government accountability and regional development.
This vital infrastructure connects Taraba and Benue States with the southern region of Nigeria. Since its collapse, travelers and transporters have been forced to endure delays and severe disruptions, while the surrounding economy continues to suffer.
The rainy season has worsened the condition, making previously viable alternative roads nearly unusable due to flooding and accelerating erosion. The resulting logistical challenges have created increased strain for both motorists and local inhabitants.
During a previous inspection, Uba Maigari, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Regional Development, labeled the situation “urgent” and declared that comprehensive reconstruction would begin shortly. Yet, several months have passed without the deployment of a contractor or initiation of any repair activity.
According to prior reports by LMSINT MEDIA, the bridge collapsed during last year’s rainy season, effectively severing Taraba from vital trade and travel links to the North Central and Southern zones of Nigeria.
Numerous residents and commercial drivers expressed deep disappointment over the unfulfilled promises made by both the Taraba State government and the Federal Government of Nigeria. Many are calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take swift and direct action by mandating immediate reconstruction through the relevant federal agencies.
One resident voiced the collective sentiment, stating, “We need action now. We cannot keep suffering endlessly while leaders delay what they promised.”
