Mohbad’s Death: Lagos Coroner Urges Prosecution of Auxiliary Nurse for Medical Negligence

In a pivotal ruling delivered at the Lagos State Coroner’s Court in Ikorodu, the magistrate overseeing the inquest into the death of Nigerian music star Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has advised that legal proceedings be initiated against auxiliary nurse Feyisayo Ogedengbe. This recommendation is based on the court’s determination that the nurse’s conduct amounted to gross medical negligence, significantly contributing to the tragic passing of the singer.

Presiding Magistrate C.A. Shotobi concluded on Friday that Ogedengbe had administered an injection to Mohbad without a valid medical prescription or authorization from a certified physician. The nurse’s actions, according to the magistrate, demonstrated a reckless disregard for professional standards and legal procedures governing medical care.

Although the coroner’s inquest ruled out any form of homicide or direct foul play, the court clearly categorized Ogedengbe’s involvement as both unlawful and indicative of severe professional misconduct.

“This court, in accordance with Section 29 of the Lagos State Coroner Law, recommends that the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) commence appropriate legal proceedings against Feyisayo Ogedengbe for practicing medicine without certification and for engaging in acts of gross negligence,” Magistrate Shotobi stated firmly.

It should be recalled that the auxiliary nurse was apprehended by law enforcement authorities following Mohbad’s controversial demise on September 11, 2023—an incident that sparked intense nationwide discourse and public demand for transparency and justice.

During her appearance before the coroner’s court in March 2025, Ogedengbe confessed to administering a tetanus injection to the late singer. She further revealed that shortly after receiving the shot, Mohbad began to vomit and exhibited severe allergic reactions, which ultimately led to his death.

This case has attracted widespread media coverage and continues to resonate deeply with fans, rights advocates, and the general public. The coroner’s recommendation for prosecution now places the focus on the Director of Public Prosecution, whose next move could set a significant precedent regarding accountability within Nigeria’s healthcare sector—especially concerning unauthorized medical practices.
