Minority Caucus of Reps Gathers Amid Efforts to Unseat Leader Chinda

Members of the House of Representatives’ Minority Caucus are scheduled to convene in Abuja on Monday to deliberate over a legal challenge initiated by their current leader, Kingsley Chinda, which aims to block a purported scheme to remove him from his leadership role.

Background to the Conflict

Tensions within the opposition bloc of the National Assembly have escalated, as some lawmakers reportedly intend to effect Chinda’s ouster when the House resumes from recess on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.
Chinda, in turn, sought judicial relief by filing a suit to restrain the alleged plot to depose him.

Grounds of the Legal Suit

In legal documents, Chinda named multiple defendants, including the National Assembly, the House of Representatives, the Speaker, the Clerk, and all minority parties. He asked the court to issue an injunction preventing any of them or their agents from removing him from his post as Minority Leader.
The suit claims that the opposition to his leadership stems from his perceived closeness to Nyesom Wike, current Minister of the FCT and former Governor of Rivers State, and his relationship with government circles.

Internal Criticism and Accusations

Some opposition members have criticized Chinda’s leadership style, alleging he has failed to convene caucus meetings since the 10th House’s inauguration over two years ago.
They also fault him for giving media interviews that seem at odds with agreed positions of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and for presiding over a caucus perceived by some as ineffective in challenging the ruling party.
These critics argue that the legal move is an attempt at self-preservation rather than a genuine defense of democratic norms.

What to Expect at Monday’s Meeting

At the Abuja meeting, caucus members will likely review the strategy for the lawsuit, weigh demands for leadership change, and attempt to build consensus on next steps.
Given the stakes, alliances and divisions may crystallize, particularly among the PDP, Labour Party, and other opposition forces.
How the court responds to Chinda’s motion may influence internal dynamics significantly — whether the judiciary allows the process to continue or bars any leadership transition.
