In the early hours of Tuesday, a destructive midnight fire swept through Ladipo Market in Mushin and Owode Onirin Market along Ikorodu Road, Lagos, resulting in the loss of goods valued at millions of naira.
Eyewitnesses reported that the inferno at Ladipo Market ignited around 1 a.m., quickly spreading through shops and warehouses packed with mechanical tools, vehicle spare parts, motorcycles, and household electrical appliances. Despite the intensity of the blaze, no casualties were recorded, thanks to the swift response from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.
Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, confirmed that firefighting teams from Isolo, Bolade, and Alausa Fire Stations were deployed to Ladipo Market. Despite facing challenges accessing the affected areas, the firefighters successfully controlled the fire, preventing it from reaching nearby properties and businesses.
Meanwhile, another fire erupted at Owode Onirin Market along Ikorodu Road, devastating several shops specializing in metallic materials. Firefighters from the Alausa and Ikorodu Fire Stations promptly intervened and extinguished the flames by 5 a.m.
Adeseye further assured the public that investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the fires once damping-down operations are completed.
“Thankfully, no lives were lost. The causes of both incidents will be uncovered after the completion of firefighting operations,” she stated.
