Micah Richards Weighs In on Arsenal’s Gyokeres Signing, Suggests Eze as Martinelli’s Replacement

Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards has shared his perspective on Arsenal’s latest transfer acquisition, Viktor Gyokeres, and suggested a potential lineup change for the Gunners involving Crystal Palace’s playmaker Eberechi Eze.

Richards, now a respected football pundit, offered his thoughts during an episode of The Rest Is Football podcast, where he discussed the North London club’s current squad restructuring and summer transfer activity under manager Mikel Arteta.

Arsenal recently completed the high-profile signing of Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP, investing a reported £64 million to secure the talented forward. The transfer reflects Arteta’s determination to strengthen Arsenal’s attacking depth ahead of the new Premier League season.

While praising the addition of Gyokeres, Richards emphasized the need for further reinforcements on the left wing and made a bold recommendation regarding Gabriel Martinelli’s position.

“We’ve been saying it week after week – Arsenal have been crying out for a striker,” Richards said. “They’ve needed a proper number nine for quite some time. But alongside that, I also feel they’re still missing a left winger.”

The former England international continued by referencing recent transfer speculation linking Arsenal with Eberechi Eze, who has been in fine form for Crystal Palace.

“There have been talks about Arsenal showing interest in Eze. Personally, I think Gabriel Martinelli has his strengths, but he’s more of an impact substitute. He’s brilliant coming off the bench and changing the tempo of a game. But starting week in, week out? If they could sign Eze, it would significantly elevate their options.”

When addressing Gyokeres’ potential, Richards expressed optimism but also a hint of caution regarding his ability to adapt to the Premier League’s intensity.

“In terms of Viktor Gyokeres, I think it’s a smart move by Arsenal,” Richards noted. “He’s a sharp and intelligent striker with exceptional movement. I’ve gone through a lot of his game footage, and he’s got the traits to be a problem for defenders.”

However, Richards added a realistic note: “The question remains – can he maintain consistency at the top level, week in and week out? That’s something only time will tell. But in all honesty, he fits exactly what Arsenal have been lacking up front.”

Richards’ remarks highlight both the progress Arsenal is making in the transfer market and the areas that still require strategic strengthening as the Gunners aim for a serious title challenge in the upcoming season.
