A tragic late-night shooting at an unauthorized car show in a New Mexico park has left three people dead and 15 others wounded. The violent incident occurred on Friday around 10:00 PM in Las Cruces, approximately 200 miles (120 kilometers) south of Albuquerque, where around 200 attendees had gathered for the event, which featured street races and stunt driving.
Investigation Reveals Rival Group Conflict
Las Cruces Police Chief Jeremy Story disclosed that the shooting stemmed from an altercation between two groups that escalated into gunfire. Several bystanders also sustained injuries in the crossfire. Authorities believe there was pre-existing hostility between the groups involved in the deadly confrontation.
“Illegal activities with vehicles and firearms were prevalent throughout the event,” Story stated while addressing the press.
Victims and Crime Scene Details
Fire Chief Michael Daniels confirmed that the 15 injured individuals range in age from 16 to 36 years old. Seven of them were transported to medical facilities in El Paso, Texas, for advanced treatment.
Law enforcement officials recovered between 50 to 60 shell casings at the extensive crime scene, highlighting the scale of the violent outbreak. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
Federal Agencies Join Investigation
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) are assisting local police in the investigation, seeking to determine the origins of the firearms used and the individuals responsible for the attack.
