Max Air Grounds Domestic Flights for 3 Months as NCAA Begins Comprehensive Audit
In response to recent safety concerns, Max Air has announced a three-month suspension of its domestic flight operations, effective midnight, January 31, 2025. This decision follows an incident involving a Max Air Boeing 737-400 (B734) aircraft, identified by registration 5N-MBD, which experienced technical issues upon landing at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano.
Past Incidents Raise Safety Concerns
Investigations have revealed that this is not the airline’s first operational safety concern. Reports indicate that in 2024, a Max Air flight carrying Borno State Deputy Governor, Umar Usman Kadafur, and other government officials encountered technical difficulties, resulting in an emergency landing at Maiduguri International Airport.
An aviation insider stated:
“Given past safety lapses, we urge the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to conduct a full-scale investigation into Max Air’s safety standards and the reliability of its fleet.”
NCAA Launches In-Depth Safety and Economic Audit
Confirming the suspension, Michael Achimugu, NCAA’s Director of Consumer Protection and Public Affairs, emphasized that the NCAA will carry out a comprehensive safety and economic audit of Max Air during this period.
According to Achimugu:
✔ Safety Audit – A thorough inspection of the airline’s organization, operational procedures, staff competence, and aircraft condition as per Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations (Part 1.3.3.3(b)).
✔ Economic Audit – An assessment of Max Air’s financial health, ensuring the airline has the resources to maintain safe and sustainable flight operations.
Resumption Hinges on Audit Outcome
Max Air’s ability to resume operations will depend entirely on the satisfactory completion of this audit. Achimugu reassured passengers that the NCAA prioritizes safety and passenger protection, acknowledging the potential inconveniences but urging public understanding.
“The NCAA remains committed to safeguarding passenger rights and ensuring that all Nigerian airlines meet global safety standards,” he added.
