Delta High Court Hands Death Sentence to Man for Killing Infant
A Delta State High Court in Akwukwu-Igbo has sentenced Obinna Eze to death by hanging after being convicted of murdering a six-month-old baby, Chimaobi Igwe. The defendant was tried on three counts: attempted murder, murder, and causing grievous bodily harm, in accordance with Sections 320, 319, and 335 of Delta State’s Criminal Code Laws.

The prosecution, led by Mr. Omamuzo Erebe, the State Solicitor-General, worked with a legal team including J.A. Otite, Solomon Funkekeme Jr., M.C. Okafor, and Mrs. Betty Adams to present the case.

The incident occurred on October 27, 2023, when a heated argument broke out between Eze and Mrs. Blessing Igwe, the infant’s mother, over a missing phone in their shared compound on Talitha Street, Asaba. According to Mrs. Igwe’s testimony, Eze attacked her and her baby with a cutlass. Both sustained severe injuries, and while they were rushed to the hospital, Chimaobi tragically passed away a week later due to his injuries.

During the trial, a pathologist testified that the infant had suffered three deep penetrating head injuries, consistent with an attack using a sharp object such as a cutlass. Justice Marcel Okoh, who presided over the case, stated that the prosecution presented overwhelming evidence, including the mother’s testimony, the pathologist’s report, and a confession made by the defendant to law enforcement.

Justice Okoh dismissed Eze’s retraction of his confession and his claims of innocence during the trial, concluding that the evidence left no room for doubt. Consequently, the court imposed the death sentence on Obinna Eze, marking the end of the tragic case.
