Authorities in Lagos State have confirmed the detention of a man suspected of sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl in the Iyana Ipaja area.

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) made this disclosure on Thursday through its verified X (formerly Twitter) handle. The agency noted it is working closely with the Nigeria Police Force to guarantee a detailed probe and prosecution, asserting that justice will be rigorously pursued in the case, which has stirred widespread concern among the public.

“We are alarmed by the deeply troubling case of sexual abuse involving a 12-year-old child in Iyana Ipaja, Lagos, which has rightly drawn substantial public interest,” the DSVA stated in its official release.

The suspect, whose identity has not been revealed, is currently detained at the Ayobo Police Station.

The DSVA confirmed that the investigation has been formally handed over to its Gender Desk Unit for comprehensive inquiry.

According to the agency, “The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency is fully engaged in handling this matter. In partnership with the police, an investigation has commenced. The Gender Desk Unit is overseeing the case, and the suspect remains in custody at Ayobo Police Station.”

The statement further mentioned that the Lagos State Government is offering full support to the survivor and her family. This support includes both medical and psychological assistance.

“The survivor has been directed to the Ipaja Family Support Unit and Psychosocial Services for immediate and extensive emotional care. Medical intervention has also been arranged,” DSVA said.

The agency also expressed gratitude for the role of public vigilance, acknowledging that community involvement is essential in protecting children from abuse.

They added, “We sincerely thank members of the public who reported this matter. Public awareness is a critical tool in safeguarding our children from sexual predators.”

Finally, the Lagos State Government reiterated its strong stance against sexual violence: “The state remains steadfast in its dedication to securing justice for survivors and ensuring that offenders are prosecuted in accordance with the law.”
