In a shocking incident, the Imo State Police Command has apprehended a 40-year-old man, Uchenna Okpara, for allegedly stabbing his brother-in-law, Uchenna Unakalamba, to death during a minor family dispute.
Incident Details
The tragic event occurred on Thursday, January 16, 2025, in Ubomiri, Mbaitoli Local Government Area, Imo State. According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, an argument between the two men escalated, leading Okpara to attack Unakalamba with a broken bottle.
Efforts to save the victim were futile as he was confirmed dead upon arrival at a nearby hospital. The police promptly arrested the suspect and recovered the weapon used in the attack.
“Responding to a distress call, police operatives apprehended the suspect (Okpara) and recovered the weapon. The victim (Unakalamba) was confirmed dead at the hospital, and the suspect remains in custody pending the conclusion of investigations and subsequent prosecution,” said DSP Okoye.
Police Crack Down on Notorious Kidnapping Syndicate
In a related development, the Imo State Police Command carried out an intelligence-driven operation on the same day, successfully dismantling a notorious kidnapping syndicate operating in the region.
The operation occurred in a forest near Agwa, Oguta Local Government Area, where police engaged in a shootout with the gang. One suspect, identified as Ozioma Dike, was apprehended, while other members of the group escaped into the bushes.
Recoveries and Confession
During the operation, the police recovered:
- A pump-action rifle loaded with seven live rounds of ammunition.
- An iPhone belonging to a victim kidnapped on January 8, 2025, in Ubomiri.
Under interrogation, Dike admitted his involvement in multiple kidnappings across communities, including Ubomiri, Ogbaku, and Ohii, all in the Mbaitoli Local Government Area.
“Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing gang members while Dike remains in custody. He is expected to be arraigned in court after the conclusion of the investigation,” DSP Okoye stated.
The police have reiterated their commitment to combating kidnapping and other criminal activities in the state, urging residents to report suspicious activities promptly.
