Magodo Residents Petition Governor Sanwo-Olu Over Construction Threat on Environmentally Sensitive Gorge

Residents of Magodo Phase II Estate in Lagos State have filed an official petition to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, calling for immediate action to stop what they describe as unauthorized construction on a designated natural gorge within the estate.

The petition, signed by Niyi Odusi, the Chairman of the Magodo Residents Association (MRA), expresses deep concern about the ongoing structural developments in the Green Valley Zone, also commonly referred to as “Oko Filling.” The community believes that these developments directly violate the Lagos State urban master plan, which classifies the area as environmentally critical.

Environmental Importance of the Gorge

The disputed land is not just empty terrain; residents emphasize that the gorge plays an essential ecological role. It is a natural water catchment area supported by rich vegetation and sandy formations, which help in stabilizing the estate’s surrounding elevated landscape. This ecosystem functions as a natural buffer against flooding, soil erosion, and landslides.

Construction on this environmentally sensitive site, according to the MRA, poses an immediate and long-term risk to homes and infrastructure already built in compliance with city planning laws.

“Developing this landlocked gorge may result in catastrophic outcomes like flooding, structural damage, and possibly deadly mudslides,” the residents said.

Allegations Against Government Officials

The residents further claim that despite the ecological concerns and legal zoning restrictions, some developers have moved forward with the backing of influential officials in the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development. They alleged that this unauthorized development is progressing under the radar, even though earlier attempts to build on this location were rightfully halted due to its environmental designation.

“There is a growing perception that influential insiders are enabling developers to distort our natural landscape at the expense of lawful property owners and existing infrastructure,” the MRA wrote.

Ignored Warnings and Growing Tensions

Residents say they had submitted a formal complaint as far back as April 24, 2025, outlining the severe environmental and safety risks involved in the development. Despite this, authorities have allegedly failed to take any effective action.

In what residents describe as an intimidation tactic, the developer recently led armed security personnel and government officials to demolish an alleged “illegal structure” on the disputed site. The MRA argues that this move is a cover-up to commence new construction disguised as a corrective operation.

“This demolition is clearly a tactic to suppress resident protests and mute legitimate questions concerning this dangerous activity,” the association noted.

They also reported that the demolition led to property damage and disruptions in the neighbourhood, further deepening anxiety among community members.

Residents’ Demands to the State Government

In their detailed petition to Governor Sanwo-Olu, the Magodo Phase II residents made the following urgent appeals:

1. Immediate halt to all development within the gorge through a stop-work order.
2. Restoration of the estate’s original zoning and adherence to the Lagos master plan by the Ministry of Physical Planning and related agencies.
3. Rehabilitation of the damaged natural gorge and restoration of its ecological balance.
4. If construction must proceed, it should only occur after proper infrastructure—including roads and drainage systems—are installed to ensure resident safety.
5. Full state-backed indemnity for any resident affected by the environmental and structural risks of this ongoing development.
