The President of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN), Professor (Dr.) Mohammad Israr, has clarified the reason behind the recent closure of several privately-owned student hostels, including Al-Ansar Indabo, emphasizing that the affected facilities were shut down for breaching institutional policies.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Professor Israr explained that the action was taken to prioritize the well-being of students and uphold the university’s guiding principles.

“We issued official warnings to the management of the hostels in question. However, their continued failure to comply with university policies forced us to take this decisive action,” he said.

The directive, issued on Monday, mandates the closure of the hostels for reasons related to non-compliance and a lack of commitment to student welfare.

Professor Israr detailed several pressing concerns that prompted the decision, such as inadequate water supply and poor electricity provision.

“The lack of compliance led to undesirable conditions in the hostels, including poor water and electricity access. These deficiencies endanger the safety and comfort of our students,” he emphasized.

He also underscored that the university’s 13-year track record of excellence would not be compromised under any circumstance.

“Our university has built a solid reputation over the years. We are committed to ethical standards that ensure student well-being and responsible conduct,” he added.

The hostels affected by the shutdown are privately operated but had previously received approval from the institution to house its students.

However, the university president pointed out:

“These operational issues are not present in our university-managed accommodations. They are mostly found in privately run facilities.”

He reaffirmed that the closures were initiated in the best interest of both students and parents, aligning with the vision of the university’s founder to contribute meaningfully to the state’s economy—without sacrificing discipline or safety.

“This decision protects both students and their families. While the founder’s mission includes contributing to local economic growth, it will never come at the expense of student welfare,” he said.

Professor Israr instructed all students affected by the closure to vacate the hostels immediately following their first-semester examinations. He also confirmed that the university is coordinating with law enforcement agencies to ensure full enforcement of the directive.

It is noteworthy that the university had earlier closed the Insktaf hostel following reports of severe security issues, including acts of torture, physical violence, and student injuries.
