In a surprising political move, Mr. Oluwagbenga Abiola, the Vice Chairman of Agege Local Government Area in Lagos State, has officially withdrawn from the 2025 chairmanship election set for July 12.

Abiola revealed his decision on Wednesday, announcing that he would no longer pursue the position and would instead back Abdulganiyu Obasa, son of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa.

Describing himself as a committed loyalist and mentee of the Speaker, Abiola emphasized that his decision was made independently and was based on loyalty and long-standing mentorship, not external pressure.

“My loyalty to Speaker Obasa is unwavering. He laid the foundation for my political rise. From appointing me as Special Assistant on Media in 2015 to supporting my journey to becoming Vice Chairman in 2021, he has been instrumental,” Abiola said.

He recounted his political trajectory:

  • Appointed Special Assistant on Media (2015)
  • Became Sole Administrator of Agege LGA (2016)
  • Appointed Secretary to the Local Government (2017)
  • Elected Vice Chairman of Agege LGA (2021)

According to Abiola, his withdrawal is aimed at promoting unity within the All Progressives Congress (APC) and boosting Abdulganiyu’s candidacy for the chairmanship role.

“Every Vice Chairman naturally aims for the top seat. I had aspirations. But when the party speaks, we must listen. I stand by the collective decision of our stakeholders and leadership,” he affirmed.

The move comes amid rising support for Abdulganiyu Obasa, with political leaders in Agege urging the Speaker to give his son a chance at leadership due to the family’s lasting impact on the area’s political development and infrastructure.

Abiola also reaffirmed his trust in the APC’s leadership and said he believes in future opportunities that may come his way, trusting his mentor’s ability to position him for greater responsibilities.

“I’m still energetic and committed to serving. Our goal is party victory, and my Obasa Youth Alliance is solidly behind this decision,” he added.

This strategic endorsement highlights the growing support around the younger Obasa and may further solidify the Speaker’s political influence in Agege and Lagos State politics.
