The truck parking projects along the Lekki-Epe corridor have suffered a major setback as investors withdraw due to the Lagos State Government’s failure to implement crucial investment policies.

Investors Shift Focus Away from Lekki-Epe Corridor

LMSINT MEDIA has learned that multiple investors are diverting their capital from the Lekki-Epe truck parks, citing financial losses caused by the government’s lack of coordination with stakeholders. The uncertainty surrounding regulatory policies has discouraged further investments in the area.

Government’s Concerns Over Another Apapa-Style Gridlock

Lanre Ope, Managing Director of Tal Concept, a key investor in truck parking facilities within the corridor, stated that the Lagos State Government is striving to prevent a repeat of the notorious Apapa traffic congestion.

Ope acknowledged investors’ right to make financial decisions but emphasized the need for continued dialogue between all parties. He remarked:

“From the government’s perspective, considering what happened in Apapa, we cannot afford to let the same situation unfold in Lekki-Epe. While some investors are withdrawing, I believe patience and engagement with stakeholders will help us find common ground.”

Ope further noted that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration sees this project as part of Lagos’ infrastructural development, making collaboration between the government and private sector critical. However, he admitted that high bank interest rates have added financial strain on investors.

“I sympathize with truck park owners, as they are justified in their decisions. However, I urge them to continue engaging all stakeholders to resolve this issue in our collective interest. I have also reached out to government officials to emphasize the need for swift action, and I am hopeful we will overcome this challenge soon.”

Investment Losses and Relocation of Funds

Another investor, Tunji Baale, Managing Director of Diamond Star Limited, which operates the Diamond Star Export Processing Terminal at LilyPond, Apapa, revealed that his company has redirected investments elsewhere due to the ongoing issues.

Baale explained that the disputes between truckers and other stakeholders have led to massive financial losses in various areas, including office spaces, residential facilities, electronic barriers, and ICT infrastructure. He expressed disappointment, stating:

“We invested heavily based on our initial agreements with the government. However, the lack of policy implementation has forced us to reconsider. We have spent significant funds on office accommodations, lighting installations, digital barriers, and ICT systems. The situation remains discouraging, and we may have to repurpose our investments.”

Baale concluded by expressing concern that unless the government steps up efforts to create a stable investment environment, more investors will abandon the Lekki-Epe truck park projects, potentially leading to logistical challenges in the future.
