In a recent budget defense session for the Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), federal lawmakers urged the Federal Government to prioritize water transportation. The call emphasized the need to increase funding to address pressing issues such as flooding, insecurity, and the overall development of inland waterways.
The joint committee on Marine Transport at the National Assembly voiced concerns over the neglect of water transportation, especially in comparison to road and air transport. Hon. Ojema Ojotu, representing the views of other senators, emphasized that while road and air transport have been receiving significant government attention, water transportation deserves equal priority.
Ojotu pointed out the cost-effectiveness of investing in inland waterways, highlighting the benefits of improving water transport infrastructure. According to him, this development would alleviate the strain on the country’s heavily congested road network and provide commuters and goods transportation with a safer, more affordable option.
“In under a year, a robust water transportation system could significantly reduce road congestion,” Ojotu noted. “It would offer a safer, cheaper alternative for moving people and goods.”
Beyond the focus on transportation, lawmakers also advocated for increased funding to combat flooding, tackle insecurity, and enhance inland waterways across the nation. They argued that investing in water transport infrastructure could drive economic growth, improve safety, and help mitigate the effects of climate-related disasters.
