LaLiga: Spanish Judge Rejects Real Madrid’s Request to Reschedule Osasuna Season Opener

In a recent development from the Spanish football league, Real Madrid’s official request to postpone their opening LaLiga match against CA Osasuna has been firmly denied. The decision was made by Spanish Football Federation judge José Alberto Peláez, who reviewed and ruled on the appeal.

The club, popularly known as Los Blancos, had submitted a formal request to delay their league opener due to their recent participation in the FIFA Club World Cup. Madrid cited insufficient recovery time as the primary reason behind the appeal.

The Spanish giants last appeared on the pitch during the Club World Cup semifinal, where they faced Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) on July 9, suffering a 4-0 defeat. This marked their final game in the tournament, and they returned to Spain to begin their off-season.

Following this, LaLiga scheduled their 2025/2026 league opener against Osasuna for August 19, precisely 41 days after the PSG match. Real Madrid argued that this schedule violated the “minimum rest and preparation period” outlined in the Spanish professional footballers’ collective agreement. According to the club, the schedule did not align with labor protections guaranteeing sufficient recovery for players between competitions.

Despite their argument, Judge Peláez dismissed the appeal in his official verdict released on Thursday. In his explanation, he confirmed that the players’ official rest period began on July 11, which gave them a full 21 days of uninterrupted rest — the exact amount stipulated by the collective labor agreement governing professional football in Spain.

The ruling means Real Madrid must proceed with their opening fixture on August 19 as originally planned, ending any hope of a schedule revision. The club now has to recalibrate its preseason and player preparation plans to comply with the current LaLiga calendar.
