Former Real Madrid defender Rafael Alkorta has issued a strong warning to Vinicius Jr, advising the Brazilian star to tread carefully in his ongoing contract negotiations with club president Florentino Perez.
According to Alkorta, mishandling the talks could put Vinicius in a similar position as legendary captain Sergio Ramos, who saw his contract extension offer withdrawn in 2023 despite his incredible legacy at the Santiago Bernabéu. Ramos eventually left Madrid, ending a long and decorated career with the club under controversial circumstances.
Alkorta emphasized that Vinicius’ current approach to negotiations is “dangerous,” stressing that attempting to apply too much pressure on Perez rarely ends well. He recalled Ramos’ situation as an example of how even the biggest names can be forced out when disagreements escalate.
Speaking to Madrid Universal, Alkorta stated:
“Trying to squeeze Florentino Perez can go wrong. Let’s remember what happened with Ramos.”
The former defender also pointed out that Vinicius’ performance level has dipped since Carlo Ancelotti decided to reposition him from the left wing into a more central role, to accommodate French superstar Kylian Mbappe.
Alkorta explained that the switch has negatively impacted the Brazilian’s natural game:
“Since they took him off the left wing, I haven’t seen him well. Playing with Mbappe has cost him.”
Currently, Vinicius’ contract with Real Madrid is set to run until 2027, but discussions about a possible improved deal have been ongoing for several months. Despite his influence and popularity among the Madridistas, Alkorta believes the 24-year-old forward must handle the matter with caution to avoid repeating past mistakes made by others at the club.
This situation raises questions about how the LaLiga giants balance loyalty to long-serving stars with the tough business side of football contracts.
