The Lagos State government has announced plans to release a significant quantity of Eko Rice into the market within the next one to two weeks. This initiative aims to provide residents with high-quality rice at a more affordable price, addressing the rising cost of food in the state.
Boosting Rice Production at the Lagos Rice Mill
During the Lagos Food Festival 2024, themed “A Taste of Culture,” the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Abisola Olusanya, highlighted efforts to ramp up production at the Lagos Rice Mill. The mill’s increased capacity will ensure that more residents can access affordable rice.
The state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has prioritized acquiring additional rice paddies to meet this goal. This strategic move will not only enhance food availability but also support the government’s commitment to reducing the cost of living for Lagosians.
Efforts to Reduce Food Prices
Olusanya also emphasized that the government is actively collaborating with key stakeholders across the food value chain. By increasing production and streamlining distribution processes, the state aims to lower food prices across various sectors.

The Food Festival, an annual event, celebrates the rich diversity of African cuisine. This year’s festival featured:
- Interactive Cooking Masterclasses: Showcasing traditional and contemporary cooking techniques.
- Engaging Competitions: Including a cooking challenge among students from institutions such as the University of Lagos, Lagos State University, and Lagos State University of Science and Technology.
- Food Exhibitions: Displaying a wide array of savory, spicy, sweet, and tangy dishes.
Olusanya noted that the festival also honors stakeholders within the food value chain, acknowledging their vital roles in food production and distribution.
