Lagos Government Moves to Seal Markets, Shops in New Crackdown on Styrofoam and Nylon Waste

The Lagos State Government has officially launched a full enforcement campaign against the use and distribution of single-use plastics, particularly targeting Styrofoam and nylon packaging materials. This comprehensive ban, which took effect on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, is part of the state’s intensified efforts to tackle environmental pollution and promote sustainable living practices.

As declared by the state authorities, any business premises—whether shops, open markets, or corporate outlets—found to be in possession of or engaged in the sale, storage, or distribution of banned plastic items, including Styrofoam food containers, plastic straws, lightweight nylon bags, and disposable cups or cutlery, will face immediate closure.

According to the Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, the action is being taken in strict adherence to the state’s environmental protection laws. He emphasized that violators will be penalized accordingly.

Speaking at a media briefing in Lagos on the day the enforcement began, Wahab made it clear that this ban specifically targets plastic materials less than 40 microns in thickness, which have been consistently linked to clogged drainage systems, urban flooding, and coastal pollution within Lagos.

“We provided a six-month grace period, which ended on June 30. Some expected us to delay due to pressure, but that will not happen,” Wahab asserted firmly.

He further stated:

“Let there be no confusion: any commercial entity—be it a shop, retail outlet, or market stall—found handling plastics below 40 microns will be sealed off. Those responsible will face prosecution under the state’s environmental legislation.”

Wahab clarified that the prohibition does not apply to all plastic items. Rather, it is restricted to four major categories of single-use plastics, namely:

• Styrofoam takeaway packs
• Plastic straws
• Lightweight nylon bags
• Disposable cups and cutlery

These items are considered highly non-biodegradable and are major contributors to environmental hazards within the state. The commissioner pointed out that while these products must not be circulated within Lagos, their transportation to other states without similar restrictions remains permissible.

Addressing concerns from stakeholders regarding possible job losses as a result of the ban, Wahab dismissed such fears as unfounded. Instead, he highlighted that this transition would stimulate job creation through the promotion of eco-friendly industries and recyclable alternatives.

“Absolutely no jobs will be lost. In fact, we anticipate the creation of even more employment opportunities as industries embrace environmentally conscious solutions,” he explained.

This initiative also places Lagos State in alignment with a growing international movement. Over 70 countries and major global cities have implemented similar bans or restrictions on single-use plastics since Bangladesh pioneered the approach in 2002. Lagos now stands proudly among those championing environmental sustainability, public health preservation, and urban resilience.
